Barbara L. (Barbary). ALLEN Born Dec , 14, at Nelson Co., WV, died 19 BFR, Mar at Nelson Co., WV, 23 years Death: May have died in childbirth. Barbara died before her Father, WIlliam Allen, wrote his will. For more information see William ALLEN: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1753502&id=I554231699 Married Nov 01, 1827 at Nelson Co., VA (4 years married) to: Alexander B . DAWSON, son of William DAWSON and Bathsheba "Barshaby" MAYO. Born 1806 C, at Amherst, Co., VA , died 1865 , at Clay County, WV BARBARA L. ALLEN DAWSON oldest Daughter of WILLIAM AND DOLLY ALLEN _______________________________________________________________________ CRAIG S. ALLEN Researching "Albemarle County" Records 7 July 2001 3. 30 October 1827 Alex. B. Dawson and Barbara Allen. (Marriage License) Security: WM.MURRILL. Officiant: EDWARD L. WARREN, November 1st, 1827 Marriage Date Witness and returned. (Not sure why listed- witnesses?) MAHALEY DAWSON - PLEASANT DAWSON; MARY DAWSON - GUTHRIDGE THURMOND; MARY DAWSON - JNO D. BAILEY; NANCY DAWSON - MATT ROBERTS. Mary Dawson was married to Guthridge Thurmond 24 Apr 1823 Nelson Co.,VA (This Mary was the daughter of John Sorrell and Jane Lyon Dawson) Nancy Dawson Married Matthew Roberts 04 Nov 1819 in Nelson Co., VA Nancy was the daughter of John Sorrell and Sarah "Sally" Carroll Dawson.) Mary Dawson Married John D. Bailey 20 Mar 1829 (This Mary was the Dau of Nelson and Sarah "Sally" White Dawson.) Note: Pleasant and Mahala Dawson married 28 July 1823 in Nelson Co., VA were Alexander B. Dawson's Neighbor in 1830, The Dawson's listed here are no relation to our Dawson line per DNA. I found William Murill in Nelson Co. b: c 1777 VA in 1830. Pease NOTE: this information was found in "ALBEMARLE CO., VA." that could place the marriage of Alexander and Barbary in Albermarle Co., VA, or some of the records were kept there after Nelson Co. split from Amherst Co. _______________________________________________________________________ Virginia Marriages, 1740-1850 Groom Name: ALEX B. DAWSON Bride Name: BARBARA ALLEN Marriage Date: 30 Oct 1827 County: Nelson State: Virginia _______________________________________________________________________ A Deed of Trust is recorded in a Nelson County Deed book between Alexander Dawson, William P. Perkins, Benjamin Perkins and John Mosby, May 1829. Alexander secures a small debt with his personal property as a bond, to be the overseer of a plantation owned by John Mosby. This land was adjacent to that of his father-in-law, William Allen in Nelson Co., VA. ________________________________________________________________________ The 1830 census shows Alexander "Dauson", with wife and son under the age of five. Barbary apparently died sometime before 1833, possibly in childbirth. Alexander is not on the tithing list for that year.~~~~~~~ ________________________________________________________________________ The above info places the death of BARBARA L. ALLEN at 25 years, with age at birth of child (RICHARDSON HENSLEY DAWSON) at her age 20. The child's arrival fits with the timing, but no more children and her age at death leave many questions... illness, other unknown children? Since ALEXANDER has 9 children with his 2nd wife it seems unlikely he would have had only one with his first wife unless something prevented it. Craig Allen. ________________________________________________________________________ A marriage bond between Alexander B. Dawson, widower, and Sarah Long, signed by her father, John Long on March 23, 1837, places Alexander in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia on that date. Sarah's mother was Elizabeth Sheetz and she and John Long were married in 1818 in Augusta County. John died in 1850 and Elizabeth after 1870. _______________________________________________________________________ Alexander and Sarah migrated to Nicholas County, Virginia (which is now Clay CO.,W.Va.), and according to one source "lured by bounteous hunting and good farm land, Alexander secured property and settled on Little Laurel (Clay County), where he remained until his death. Little Laurel is only a few miles from Ivydale where I grew up but it is located on top of one the mountains near Ivydale in a remote and difficult to reach area. Alexander and Sarah are listed in the 1840 Census of Henry District of Nicholas County. This district became Henry Township of Clay County, Virginia (now W.Va.), in 1858. Twice he was paid by neighbors to take their place, once he enlisted, he was captured once and escaped. He rode in the war with General Lee and told stories about the battles. One of the stories he told was about General Lee in Richmond. He was rough mountain man and very protective of his family. He had a beard and from his pictures he was a very nice looking man.He carried his sword for years to ward off "Carpetbaggers". He even used it to cut grass weeds Source: Mary Hazel Dawson, Denney Nov. 1997 Grand Daughter of R.H.Dawson ________________________________________________________________________ "Grandfather Richardson was a man among men. His middle name is spelled HENSLEY. He left his family and went to Virginia to fight in the war. He fought with General Lee in one of the first skirmishes to arise. He enlisted 3 times, the first two he served with no pay, the third time he accepted money to join in another man's place. He fought until the end of the war, then went home to his wife and chidren." "My father Meade told me one Grandfather Richardson was an outstanding, unusual individual and that one day he was seen cutting corn with his sword. Another time we had been travling by train an as we were climing off the train my Mother had two babies in her arms and some people were sitting off to one side laughing at her, My grandfather still having his rifle pulled it out and marched back and fourth chanting some disgraceful poem and frightened the low class away." "My Father Meade lived in Eckle, just down the river from Clay, all the children were born there. Dad had the only Grocery Store in this tiny mining town. Dad said before I was born Grandfather Richardson lived with him for many years. One day when as the mine was blasting close to the store we were warned to stay inside. But Grandfather went out anyway. He said "I'm not afraid, during the war I had mini balls falling all around me." Harold said "Mini balls were great Lead Balls, used in cannons" "We had an "Outhouse" (outdoor toilet) on the hill which we used summer and winter. Grandfather started up the steps, it was winter and everything was covered with ice and snow, he slipped and fell, broke his hip. He refused to let us call a Doctor, he died within 2 years at age 93." Source: Harold Dawson, (son of Meade, Grandson of Richardson) Oct. 15, 1995.
