In Civil war: 115th Indiana Infantry, Company A ,formed in Greene Co, IN. He saw service in Kentucky and Tennessee, living much of the time on parched corn alone. At the expiration of the first enlistment he reenlisted in the 156th Indiana Volunteer Infantry on 16 Mar 1865, serving until the end of the war.

By 1880 James and wife were living in Cloud Co, KS, Buffalo Twp. He was active in political and civic interests. He served on school boards and helped in the building of the new Presbyterian Church in Concordia. In 1889 he was elected Representative for the Kansas State Legislature.

In September 1873 he moved his family, which included his wife, children mother, Elizabeth (McBain), and his mother-in-law, Mary "Polly" (Hodges) Gentry to Buffalo Twp. Cloud Co., KS. They went by train to Junction City, KS and by covered wagon for three days to Cloud County. He acquired 160 acres of good flat land with a barn and house, four and one-half miles southwest of the town of Concordia.( From Lenore (Bland) Brown)
