OLIVER, ELBERT WESLEY (Hitchcock County History Book published in 1989, by the way there are pictures of them in this book)
Elbert Wesley Oliver was born in Indiana 1835.
He was real active around the town, he had a small business. He was a member of the lodge "Mason", at that time had another name but later was called Mason, the lodge of today.

This item was in the Shrine magazine about 1962 or 63. He was married to Louise McKinley.

To this union nine children were born; John, May (Mary Ann), Ella, Lou, Ida, Martin, Minnie, Alma (Ollie) and Charles. He was a Veteran of the Civil War, Volunteer from his State. He served 4 years, was captured and suffered in Libby Prison the cold, rain, no food. As a result of the poor conditions, became very ill and was a semi-invalid the rest of his life. While he was gone Louise kept the children together, were sad days and many hardships were endured. On his arrival home after the conflict, they moved the family to Missouri, leaving the 3 oldest girls in Indiana and they never did move west. Years later they moved on West to Nebraska, settling in Palisade 1882-83. The homestead northwest of township of Palisade, gave Alma (Ollie) and Charles a chance to attend school in the Stone School House north of Hamlet. Years later her granddaughter Shirley taught in the same Stone School House. Some years later moved to Trenton then on to Culbertson. The children, grown by now, married with many children, were scattered over the U.S.
The last years they lived in the Soldiers Home in Grand Island, NE. They were very comfortable and enjoyed the company of people their age.
P.S. A bit for laughter, Alma (Ollie) at age of 4 years when left Indiana had to ride in the feed box as the sway of the covered wagon made her sick and the remedy of a brown paper bad against her stomach kept her from being ill. Still use the remedy today with the new modern vehicles. Written by Isabel Busselli
