Mother said she made her a bed from a shoe box and diapers from handcerchifs. She was so small she wore doll clothes. Jean was 5'6 Hazel eyes and Med Brown Hair. She had small hands and I often wondered how they could be so strong. She loved to read and read everything she could get her hands on. She was a great cook and was always trying new receipts. She loved to Knit, Embrodery and crochet. Jean was a sensitive person, good natured and loved to laugh. Once we had a "duel" with hairdryers and she was shocked at me when I put my dryer under her blouse. Such a prude. (smile) She was always telling me stories about our Mom, Dad and things that happened when we were young. We would sit for hours and talk on her front steps. I have always admired Jean for her courage, 3 of her children died. Her daughter when she was 7, her youngest son when he was 21 and her oldest son was 39. She was an Air Force wife and moved around a lot, she had full responsibility of the house and children. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ She was given "The Outstanding Homefront Award" in 1967. It was presented by: G. H. Dent, Colonel, USAF Commander. This is a great honor for a woman to receive. It reads: In recognition of outstanding Homefront Support furnished while her husband performed isolated duty in South East Asia. Her acceptance and discharge of total family responsibility and the many additional burdens imposed thereby contributed greatly to his morale and effectiveness and thereby to the accomplisment of this organization's mission. Presented with grateful appreciation On the 5th day of May, 1967. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I believe that was one of the most thrilling things that ever happened to her. It was a total suprise and she wondered why she received it. She said "I was just doing what I was supposed to do." (As if to say I didn't do all that much.) Raising 5 boys alone is a lot!
