consideration of the sum of twenty shillin gs of good lawful money for our
use paid so our receiver general of Revenues in this our Colony and
Dominion of Virginia We have given granted and confirm ed and by these
presents for us our heirs and successors do give grant and co nfirm unto
JOHN SPAIN one certain tract or parcel of land containing two hund red
acres lying and being in the County of Dinwiddie on the north side of
H atcher's Run and bounded as followeth to wit... "Beginning at a
faced corne of Matthew Fords thence along his line north forty two
degrees thirty minutes e ast two hundred and eleven poles to his corner in
Matthew May's line south on e hundred and twenty nine poles along
William's line to a corner thence along his line west eighteen poles to a
corner south fifty one degrees west one hu ndred and fifty four poles to

Emma Spain Gilbert wrote: The following was found among her Grandfather
Willis Spain's papers. Thanks to Linna and Frances Wehe, who are great
granddaughters of Willis and Nancy Eppes "Spain" Spain, giving us older
history than any of us knew. Using his words he writes: My grandfather
was John Spain (1721-1798). He lived in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia near
Hatcher's R un, a small stream of water, thirteen miles West of
Petersburg, and one hundr ed miles from the sea shore where Shad were
caught.

John Spain had nine sons. They were Thomas, William, James, Joshua,
Theodoric, Matthew, Hezekiah, and Samuel, and hadfour daughters. They
were Martha, Mary, Agnes and Polly F rances. Thirteen in all.
