He came from family of 9 children, only 2 living. --- (notes from Flora Hardy Acton -- after the Civil War, Moses Andrew Acton lived with his sister at Bentonsport, Iowa. Went to school there.Afterwards traveled for woolen mills with team of horses, buying wool. Went to Kansas and took a claim, during grasshopper time in Kansas. He came back to Iowa and begged for supplies for Kansas people, got 3 carloads of food, clothing and bedding. Grasshoppers were so heavy the sun was darkened. Everyone was at Aunt Bell's at a picnic the afternoon the grasshoppers came. It began to look dark, and the grasshoppers stripped the garden, corn and everything. After that, Moses did many things.Assessor 2 or 3 years, took active part in everything. After Flora Hardy went to Kansas, there were 3 years of drought. The year she and Moses were married there were good prospects for wheat, it turned wet and wheat rust, got .35 cents per bushel. Moses wrote to a man he had worked for in hardware and he toldhim he would give him a job, sold tinware and hardware to country stores. Sold in Madrid, Iowa before they moved there. Rented a house with a school teacher. Teacher taught where Perkins did. Had part of house shared kitchen. She was raising her brothers child, same age as Otto. Took rooms in next house to get away from spoiled child. Lived there 2 months. Moved because of typhoid over on east side of river. Rented from old couple. Rented one of 3 houses. Hendricks loaned Moses enough to build, lot sale in North DesMoines, built a 3 room house on lot and burn, lived ther 4 years. Otto was 9 when they moved. Traded that lot and two other lots for the farm and paid some down besides. Farm cost $24.00 an acre and could have sold at $450.00 at one time. Mable was 1 year old when they moved to farm. Pearl and Mabel were born in North DesMoines, lived on farm until Pearl was 10. Then built house in DesMoines, lived there 3years, then moved back to the farm. Stayed there 3 years and went to DesMoines. Came back and stayed on farm. Doctor said Moses was to ill for the city. Lived on farm for 3 years before he died.
