It has been disproven that Bethia Hopkins was the daughter of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower (it has also been disproven that Constance Dudley was a wife of that Stephen).
I am not aware of anyone however who has found the parents of the Bethia Hopkins who married William Kelsey. There was a John Hopkins in Hartford at the same time as Kelsey's Bethia, but Bethia married back in England, so there is no reason to necessarily connect John and Bethia. However, the Hartford John Hopkins named his own daugher Bethia, but that Bethia is NOT the same person as the Bethia who married William Kelsey. The commonality of names makes me think that John Hopkins and Kelsey's Bethia Hopkins might be siblings, but that is only speculation

For "proof" that Bethia was not the daughter of the Mayflower Stephen Hopkins, see article on Stephen Hopkins by Caleb Johnson in "The American Genealogist", July 1998, 73:161-171.

Bethia and Stephen HOPKINS are the children of John HOPKINS of Cambridge.

Pat. Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower did not have a daughter named Bethia Hopkins (ref. Mayflower - Hopkins). Possibly you mean John Hopkins of Cambridge, Ma. prop/frm. 1634 who moved to Hartford, Ct. in 1636 and d 1654. He had two children Stephen and Bethiah. His wid. Jane m2 Nathaniel Ward of Hadley, Ct. John Hopkins 'Mr., a merchant of London, of fair estate, great esteem for religion and wisdom in outward affairs'. (Pope's Pioneers)
Hope this helps.

According to "The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33".

" Several false leads regarding the identity of the wife of William Kelsey have been carefully examined and discarded by George E. McCracken and Gale Ion Harris. Based on onomastic evidence Harris suggests that her given name was Hester."

"Marriage: By 1634_ _ , who was born about 1613 and living at Hartford in December 1666

Be careful as there were two different Bethia Hopkins in Hartford at about the same time.
The older of the two was the one who married William Kelsey and settled in Hartford. That Bethia was a contemporary of a John Hopkins also of Hartford, and to make things confusing, that John named his own daughter Bethia. I have speculated that because of the commonality of names John Hopkins and Kelsey's Bethia Hopkins might be siblings (making the two Bethias aunt & niece), but that is only speculation on my part.

If Kelsey's Bethia were indeed the daughter of a John Hopkins, then we have two different Johns as well -- I think however, that the two Bethias have been mistakenly merged, and that we really do not know who Kelsey's Bethia's parents were.

William Kelsey and Bethia Hopkins married back in England so there is no reason to believe she had any relatives who accompanied her to New England.

I am decended from William and Bethia Kelsey through Stephen. I have done a lot of searching on the Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower and I believe he is not the father of Bethia. I believe there are 2 Stephens, both born in or around the same place, one in 1578 and one in 1581. The Stephen from the Mayflower did not marry Constance Dudley and did not have a child named Bethia. I think ours is the one born in 1581. Maybe they were cousins? Both married app. the same time in London. I think this is confusing people to the point where they are merging the two families together, which makes it hard to figure out which family is which. I think they often leave out Bethia because her birth date collides with Giles' birth date, which is proven. Unless Stephen was a polygamist?

Caleb Johnson's work should prove once and for all that the Bethia Hopkins who married William Kelsey back in England before coming to Hartford, CT, was NOT the Mayflower Stephen's daughter.
Indeed, there is no reason that I know of to believe that any of Bethia's relatives accompanied her to New England.

One of William & Bethia (Hopkins) Kelsey's contemporaries in 17th century Hartford was named John Hopkins, and that John named his own daughter Bethia -- this makes me speculate that this John Hopkins and Kelsey's Bethia Hopkins might have been siblings (& thus the two Bethias aunt & niece), but that remains only speculation on my part. Unless we have yet another John Hopkins, Kelsey's Bethia is NOT the daughter of John Hopkins as I have seen posted.
