Margaret Fleming was born before 1532. She was the daughterofMalcolmFleming, 3rd Lord Fleming and Janet Stewart.1 Shemarried,firstly,Robert Graham , Lord Graham before 1548.1 She married,secondly,ThomasErskine, Master of Erskine, son of John Erskine, 4th LordErskineandLady Margaret Campbell, from 30 January 1548 to 1549.1Shemarried,thirdly, John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl, son of JohnStewart,3rd Earlof Atholl and Grizel Rattray, on 1 April 1557.1 She diedafter 15August1584.1
From before 1548, her married name became Graham.1 From from30January1548 to 1549, her married name became Erskine.1 From 1 April1557,hermarried name became Stewart.1 Through her marriage,MargaretFleminggained the title of Countess of Atholl on 1 April 1557.She wasthoughtto possess powers of incantation.1
Margaret was reputed to be a witch, and wassaidtohavecastthepainsofchildbirth from the Queen of James VIuponMargaret,daughter ofJohnBeaton of Creich. She may have been a memberoftheDianistcultconsidered by James VI to be one of the mostdangerousmenacestohispersonal safety and his crown. Margaret'sgrandmother,AgnesStuart,wasthe great-grandmother of Francis Stewart, 5thEarlofHepburn,theArch-Dianist of Scotland. Margaret Beaton,whosufferedtheQueen'schildbirth pains by proxy, had a sister Janetwhowasalsoalledged to bea witch, and was said to have influencedQueenMaryintoher disastrousmarriage to James Hepburn, 4th EarlofBothwell.Margaret'sson by herthird marriage, John Stewart, EarlofAtholl, was oneof theconspiratorswho in 1593 helped smuggle the EarlofBothwell intotheking's bedroom. In 1591 a number of Dianistswerechargedwithattempting to murder theKing by witchcraft in order"thatanothermighthave ruled in HisMajesty's place, and the governmentmighthave gonetothe Devil".Bothwell escaped, but his co-conspiratorswereburnt atthestake.
