When the U. S. 1800 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Ebenezer's family was 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45.
According to the History of Addison County, Vermont, Ebenezer and his brother Jedediah were elected the first Justices of the Peace in Lincoln, Addison County, VT, in 1801.
Ebenezer was elected Town Clerk of Lincoln, in 1810.
When the U. S. 1810 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Ebenezer's family was 2 males under 10, 2 males 16-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female 26-45.
When the U. S. 1820 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Ebenezer's family was 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female over 45. Ebenezer, Junior was living in the next house.

Children:

1.
woman Mary Polly Durfey‏‎
Born ‎ May 05, 1787 at Ellington, Tolland County, CT, died ‎ 1840 at Bristol, Addison County, VT‎, 52 or 53 years
Polly's birth was recorded in the Ellington, Tolland County, CT, Births Book 1, page 5. Mary's marriage to Elisha Roberts and her death date of 1840, are from Mrs. Naomi (Durfee) Reed of Bountiful, Davis County, UT, in 1984. Her source was the archives of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mormons. Based on the information in the 1850 census I am convinced that Mary did not die in 1840, and that the Mary Roberts who appeared on the 1850 census with Elisha, and who was born in 1787, in Connecticut was this Mary Polly (Durfey) Roberts. The 1805 marriage date for Polly and Elisha Roberts is also found in Gene Pool Individual Records, a database on the internet at Ancestry.com, July 2000. It was compiled by a medical research group studying genetics. There are numerous errors in this database and all information must be verified from other sources. This database gives Polly's death date as June 25, 1858, but Mrs. Naomi (Durfee) Reed gives 1840. Elisha's birth, death and parents are also from this database. When the U. S. 1810 census of New Haven, Addison County, VT, was taken Elisha Roberts' family was 1 male 26-45, 4 females under 10, and 1 female 16-26. No Peter Sager was listed in the index to the 1810 census anywhere in VT. When the U. S. 1820 census of New Haven, Addison County, VT, was taken Elisha Roberts' family was 2 males under 10, 1 male 26- 45, 2 females under 10, 3 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45. No Peter Sager was listed in the index to the 1820 census anywhere in VT. When the U. S. 1830 census of Bristol, Addison County, VT, was taken Elisha Roberts' family was 1 male 10-15, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 40-50. No Peter Sager was listed in the index to the 1830 census anywhere in VT. When the U. S. 1840 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Elisha Roberts' family was 1 male 5-10, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, and 1 female 20-30. No Peter Sager was listed in the index to the 1840 census anywhere in VT. When the U. S. 1850 census of Bristol, Addison County, VT, was taken Corney (Carney) Battles's family was Corney 37, a farmer, born in VT, Lorinda 34, born in VT, Amanda 12, born in VT, Cornelia 10, born in VT, Calista 4, born in VT, Elisha Roberts a laborer, 68, born in NY, and Mary Roberts 63, born in CT. Lorinda may have been a daughter of Elisha. No Peter Sager was listed in the index to the 1850 census anywhere in VT. Apparently Polly and Elisha were divorced as he was still living when she married Peter Sager. Polly's marriage to Peter Sager on August 19, 1815, in Franklin, Franklin County, VT, is from the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. Based on the information in the 1850 census, I believe that the Polly who married Peter Sager was not Mary Polly (Durfey) Roberts and I further believe that, since they did not appear on any census, that they probably went west shortly after their marriage. If all of the young people listed with Elisha on the 1820 census were his children he had 2 sons and 5 daughters.
2.
woman Sally Durfey‏‎
Born ‎ Apr 14, 1789 at Ellington, Tolland County, CT, died ‎ Jan 21, 1870 at Lincoln, Addison County, Vermont, USA‎, 80 years
Sally's birth was recorded in the Ellington Births Book 1, page 5. Chase's birth is from the Quaker records as transcribed onto index cards at the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. The record states that Chase was born " ... on the 7th day and 11th month of 1789 ... he was his mothers first child ... she was 20 years of age and her father was 22 ... ." Records in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, state that Chase was born July 11, 1789. Photo copies of the original Quaker Meeting records would solve this conflict. Chase and Sally were members of the Society of Friends, Quakers. The marriage date for Sally and Chase from the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier is obviously incorrect as it gives September 4, 1814. Their first child was born August 23, 1812. This was almost certainly an error made by the person who copied the date from the original Ferrisburg, Addison County, VT, Quaker Meeting records Book 1, page 79 onto the index cards. This record states that at the time of their marriage she was of Lincoln and he was of Monkton, Addison County, VT. There is another record in the card file which is also from Quaker records which states that Chase Lamos and Sally Durfey were married at the Lincoln meeting " ... on the 4 day and 9th month of 1811." Photo copies of the original records would probably clear up this conflict. No record of Chase Lamos was found on any U. S. census in Vermont. When the U. S. 1820 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Moses Sargeant's family was 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45, and 2 people were engaged in agriculture. Most of these young people would be children on Moses by his first wife. A family group sheet from the Family History Library states that Chase Lamos died before May 17, 1828. The source is not clearly stated. Unless Chase and Sally divorced, and that is very unlikely, he must have died before 1821, when Sally and Moses Sargent had their first child. When the U. S. 1830 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Moses Sargeant family was 1 male under 5, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 15-20, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 34-40, and 1 female 40-50. When the U. S. 1840 census in Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Moses Sargent family was 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 50-60. When the U. S. 1850 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Daniel Sargeant's family was Daniel 29, farmer, Mary 32, Sewell J. 7, Lois 7, Alson 3, William 1, Sally (mother) 60, Moses Lee 13, and Caroline Will 17. All were born in VT. Daniel Sargeant's birth is from the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. Their source was the Lincoln Quaker Meeting Records. It also states that Daniel was his mother's first child (by Moses) and that she was his second wife. Moses was a farmer. When the U. S. 1860 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Daniel H. Sargeant's family was Daniel H. 38, farmer, Harriet 30, John 18, Lois 16, Moses 14, William 12, Sally (mother) 75, and a farm laborer. All were born in VT. Sally's death is from the Lincoln, Addison County, Vital Records. The record states that Sally's age was 80 years, 9 months, and 7 days. Some of the information on this family is from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, including family group sheets which were sent by Mrs. Naomi (Durfee) Reed of Bountiful, Davis County, UT, and Mrs. Vilate (Durfee) McBride, also of Bountiful, in 1985.
3.
man Prosper Durfey‏‎
Born ‎ May 05, 1791 at Ellington, Tolland County, CT, died ‎ Jul 20, 1879 at Lincoln, Addison County, Vermont, USA‎, 88 years
Prosper's birth was recorded in the Ellington Births Book 1, page 5. Prosper Durfey of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, served nine days in Captain Jehiel Saxton's Company of Sumner's Regiment and fought in the battle of Plattsburgh, NY, in September 1814. From the records of the Vermont Adjutant General Book 51, AGO, Page 18. The marriage of Prosper and Sophia was recorded in the Tolland Marriages Book 3, page 54. Sophia was of Tolland at the time of their marriage. They were married by Reverend Theophilus Smith. When the U. S. 1820 census of Camillus, Onondaga County, NY (page 12), was taken Stephen Durphy's family was 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 26-45. Prosper Durfey, son of Ebenezer also lived in Camillus in 1820. When the U. S. 1820 census of Camillus, Onondaga County, NY (page 1), was taken Prosper Durphy's family was 1 male 26-45, and 1 female 16-26. One person was engaged in agriculture. There were no Durfees (any spelling) listed on the 1830 census in Camillus. When the U. S. 1840 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Prosper Durfey's family was 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50. When the U. S. 1850 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Prosper Durfey's family was Prosper 59, laborer, born in CT, Sophia 49, born in CT, Wolcot 23, iron maker, born in CT, Prosper 21, farmer, born in CT, and Timothy 14, born in CT. The children were not born in CT. On June 16, 1855, Prosper Durfey, of Lincoln, applied for and received bounty land for his service in the War of 1812. National Archives War of 1812 Service Records. When the U. S. 1860 census of Ripton, Addison County, VT, was taken Prosper Durfey's family was Prosper 64, farmer, born in CT, Prosper, Junior 31 (should be 21), Clarissa 26, Mary J. 5, Sophia 3, Sarah A. 1, and Wolcott 23. All were born in VT, except Prosper, Senior. Prosper, Senior's wife Sophia was not listed. Did she die before 1860 or did the enumerator make a mistake? When the U. S. 1870 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Clarissa Durfee's family was Clarissa 35, Sarah 11, Polly 9, Phebe 6, and Prosper 76, retired farmer. All were born in VT. The deaths of Prosper and Sophia are from the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. Darrell James Durfey, of Portland, Multnomah County, OR, states in 1999, that Prosper and Sophia were married June 27, 1822, and that Sophia was born April 4, 1802, in Ellington. His e mail address was . Vermont Roster of the War of 1812-1814. Herbert Johnson, Vermont Adjutant General. 1933. Page 34.
4.
man Ebenezer Durfey‏‎
Born ‎ Dec 28, 1793 at Ellington, Tolland County, CT, died ‎ Sep 10, 1832 at Prob. Bristol, Addison County, VT‎, 38 years
Ebenezer's birth is from the Ellington Births Book 1, page 5. The marriage of Ebenezer and Judith is from the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. He was of Lincoln at that time and she was of Bristol, Addison County, VT. When the U. S. 1820 census of Lincoln, Addison County, VT, was taken Ebenezer Durfey, Junior's family was 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 16-26. Ebenezer, Senior was living in the next house. When the U. S. 1830 census of Bristol, Addison County, VT, was taken Ebenezer Durfey, Junior's family was 1 male 10-15, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 30-40. Ebenezer, Senior was living in Lincoln, Addison County, VT. Ebenezer Durfey, Junior's death date is from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and was sent by Mrs. Naomi (Durfee) Reed, in 1984. The names of Ebenezer Durfey's three children are not known. All of his children were under 18 years of age when he died therefore there should be guardianship records in the town or county records where he died. There might also be a will that names his children. The will of Ebenezer Durfey, Senior might mention these children. Senior died in Westport, Essex County, NY, about 1847.
5.
woman Lorinda Larinda Durfey‏‎
Born ‎ Feb 19, 1796 at Ellington, Tolland County, CT, died ‎ Jun 27, 1803 at Lincoln, Addison County, Vermont, USA‎, 7 years
Lorinda's birth is from the Ellington Births Book 1, page 5. Her death is from the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. It states that she was 7 years of age and was buried in Merrill Cemetery.

Durfey's, household was Betsy A., widow, 72, born in VT, her father was born in CT, and her mother in VT, and Fannie Jandro, a servant, married, 25, born in NY, as were her parents. According to the History of Bristol, Vermont 1762-1940, page 11, Mrs. Betsey Durfee (Milo) donated land for a addition to the Baptist Church, in 1885. The names of Betsey's parents and birth location came from a genealogy data base on the internet at www.gentree.com, 1998. Betsey A. Durfey died August 16, 1889, in Bristol, Addison County, VT, at the age of 82. From the vital records card file in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. This record says that her mother's name was Hannah. One researcher states that Milo was married to Katherine Chilson Dalaymple before he married Betsey Fitch. I have never found any record of such a marriage.
7.
woman Melinda Durfee‏
Born ‎ Feb 20, 1806 at Lincoln, Addison, Vermont, USA, died ‎ May 14, 1884 at Ogden, Weber, Utah, USA‎, 78 years
The Hatch Genealogy (I failed to note the author's name) on pages 361-363 gives an excellent biographical sketch of the lives of Josephus and Melinda and genealogical information on all of their children. It states that Josephus was six feet tall, weighed 240, had black curly hair and grey eyes. He was a farmer and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons, in February 1840. They lived in Bristol, Addison County, VT, where all but one of their eight children were born. Four of their children died young. They moved from Vermont to the vicinity of Nauvoo, Hancock County, IL, in the fall of 1843, accompanied by Josephus' parents. In September 1846, they moved to the vicinity of Sugar Creek, IA, and while en route Melissa gave birth to a son they named Royal. In the fall of 1847, they moved to a place called Winter Quarters in Nebraska, where Josephus' mother died December 15, 1847, and the entire family was afflicted with chills and fever. In May 1852, the entire family, including Sophronia's new husband Peter Tidwell, set out for the Mormon settlement in UT, arriving in Salt Lake City, in September 1852. Later that same fall they moved to Ogden, where Josephus made his living by making baskets, and growing fruit. When the U. S. 1870 census of Ogden, Weber County, UT, was taken Josephus Hatch's family was Josephus 69, retired, born in VT, Malinda 64, born in VT, and Elvira Tidwell (their granddaughter) 14, born in UT. The death dates of Joseph and Melinda are found in Gene Pool Individual Records, a database on the internet at Ancestry.com, July 2000. It was compiled by a medical research group studying genetics. There are numerous errors in this database and all information must be verified from other sources. This database gives May 14, 1884, as Melinda's death date. The Hatch Genealogy, page 362, gives Melinda's death date as May 9, 1884. In 1985, Mrs. Vilate (Durfee) McBride, Bountiful, Davis County, UT, sent me photo copies of pages 154-157, and pages 178-181 from a book authored by Archibald Bennett, bearing the title The Later-Day Saint Family, The Family Group Record. The book is about genealogical research for religious purposes and the reason that it is of interest is that the author elected to use the descendants of John Durfey to illustrate the correct method of researching your ancestors. He cautioned researchers that there are many errors in the Archives and that all information should be verified. In Chapter Forty-three, Records Truly Made Out, the author states that records, dated 1913, in the Archives (Morman Church baptism and endowment records) for John Durfey and Miss Foster state that John was born about 1715, in Ireland and Miss Foster was born about 1717, in England. He further stated that their children were John of Rhode Island, James of Rhode Island, Joseph Durfey who married Abigail Buck, Benjamin, born in Connecticut, and Molly, born in Connecticut, who married Ebenezer Dean (Dain). Bennett included in his book a great deal of information about the family of Josephus and Melinda (Durfee) Hatch. Archibald did not give the name of the person who prepared the sheet nor did he give that person's sources. I suspect that the sheet was prepared by Alice Jane (Durfey) Rice (1872-1973), widow of Nathaniel Rice of Albion, ID, but I have never seen a photo copy of her original sheet with sources listed.
8.
man Dennis Durfey‏‎
Born ‎ Dec 12, 1808 at Lincoln, Addison County, Vermont, USA, died ‎ Nov 21, 1843 at VT or NY‎, 34 years
When the U. S. 1840 census of Malone, Franklin County, NY, was taken Dennis Durphy's family was 1 male under 5, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 30-40. Both of Dennis' children were minors when he died so there should be guardianship records and probate records on them in the probate court that is responsible for that area. When the U. S. 1850 census of Malone, Franklin County, VT, was taken Rebecca Durfey's family was Rebecca 45, born in VT, and Ebenezer 10, born in NY. Living a short distance away was Julia Durfey in the house of Hugh Magill. When the U. S. 1850 census of Malone, Franklin County, NY, was taken Hugh Magill's family was Hugh Magill, manufacturer, 49, born in Ireland, Rebecca Magill 20, born in VT, Samuel Magill, merchant, 23, born in VT, Henry Magill, merchant's clerk, 17, born in VT, Robert Magill 15, born in VT, Mary A. Magill 13, born in VT, Lucinda Dickey 14, born in Ireland, Julia A. Durfey 17, born in VT. There were several other unrelated people listed in his household. Is it possible that Rebecca was Hugh Magill's sister? There were no Durfeys or Magills listed on the 1860 census of Malone.
