Eudes received from the Conqueror the island of Holderness (Meaux) shortly after the compilation of Domesday which had previously been in possession of Dreu de La Beuvriére and espoused the caue of William Rufus after the death of King William I. His castle of Aumale received an English garrison, which was enlarged and strengthened by him and his son, Stephan, at the expense of the royal treasury, on the invasion of Normandy by William Rufus in 1090. Later he conspired with Robert de Mowbray and other powerful nobles to depose the king and place his son, Stephan, on the throne. The plot having failed, Eudes and Stephan were captured and thrown into prison, in 1094, where Eudes remained until his death, c. 1108. Stephan was condemned to have his eyes put out, but by the intercession of his wife and family and the payment of a large sum of money was liberated.
