The ancient arms of Hainault were retained by Lord Josceline, but his children assumed the surname of Percy by agreement with the heiress of Percy. 2nd and youngest son was Richard de Percy. NEWLIN, MINOR LINES - 24th ggrandfather

Bro. of Queen Adeliza, 2nd wife of Henry I; son of Godfry Barbatus, Duke of Lorraine and Count of Brabant, who was descended form the Emperor Charlemagne. Lady Agnes only consented to marry him with the understanding that Joscelyn would adopt either the Percy surname or arms. He chose the former, so as to retain his claim to the principality of his father, should the line of the reigning duke become extinct. Queen Adeliza as a wedding gift granted them the honour of Petworth, Sussex, comprising 21 knights' fees. Henry, the eldest son of this illustrious alliance, was the ancestor of the Percys of Northumberland, whose fame on the field of battle and brilliant marriages occurred with each of the 18 succeeding generations, covering a period of nearly 500 years. Married Agnes, co-heiress to the Percy estates; apparently 'of handsome presence and great skill in tourney'. Before her death in 1151, Jocelin's half-sister, Queen Adeliz, widow of Henry I, gave him the Honour of Petworth. At the centre of this large estate was a fortified manor house, crenellated by royal sanction in 1309. [Petworth House, p. 56]
