He stood at the head of the baronage in wealth and power and his summons to the King's Court to answer for his refusal of aid to the King was answered by a haughty defiance. He was suffered to retire to his estates in Normandy, but his English lands were confiscated to the Crown. [WBH - England] FOSTER, MINOR, NEWLIN LINES !William II's chief lay castle-builder was Robert, Lord of Belleme, a warrior who was also described as a 'skilfull artificer', and who was responsible for castles at Arundel, Gloucester, Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury and Tickhill, and perhaps others. Arundel is listed among the outstanding shell-keep castles of the years 1100-50. [Castles of England, Scotland and Wales, pp. 13, 14, 16, 21, 29, 196, 203] !Robert stood at the head of the baronage in wealth and power: and his summons to the King's Court to answer for his refusal of aid to the King was answered by a haughty defiance. 60,000 Englishmen followed Henry to the attack of Robert's strongholds along the Welsh border. It was in vain that the nobles about the King, conscious that Robert's fall left them helpless in Henry's hands, strove to bring about a peace. Only an early surrender saved Robert's life. He was suffered to retire to his estates in Normandy, but his English lands were confiscated to the Crown. Later King Henry was called to Normandy where the misgovernment of Duke Robert had alienated the clergy and tradesfolk, and where the outrages of nobles like Robert of Belesme forced the more peaceful classes to call the King to their aid. They met on the battlefield of Tenchebray. [Nations of the World - England, p. 150-1] !No one of the Norman chieftains was more cruel or rapacious, no one more powerful. King Henry I had surrounded him with spies, and preferred many charges against him of the heaviest nature. The earl fled to his castles, and refused to appear to abide a trial. Henry immediately called out the whole military force of the country, so formidable was this baron. His castles of Arundel and Blythe surrendered; and Bridgenorth, after a long siege, was opened to the royal troops. Robert had possession of Shrewsbury, and the king marched with a vast army to besiege the town, by a road called the "Huvel Hegen" (the Evil Hedge). This road, which in some places is so narrow two horses can barely pass, was the only road to Shrewsbury. King Henry had 60,000 troops to get to the battle who he ordered to cut a wide thoroughfare through these woods for his passage and as a public highway thereafter. The rebel earl surrendered, and was banished. [Knight's Popular History, Vol. 1, p. 265-6] Count of Alencon and Seignior of Belesme; son of Roger de Montgomery and Mabel de Belesme. Inherited his father's Norman estates and on the death of his bro. Hugh, purchased his English earldoms from William Rufus for 3000 pounds, which he forfeited in 1102, when he rebelled against King Henry I and was banished from England. [Falaise Roll, p. 80, 101] William/Guillaume de Pantoul took arms against him; Robert as third Earl of Shrewsbury, disinherited him. But going over to King Henry I, William was largely instrumental in crushing de Belesme at Bridgenorth, on which account he was given the custody of the castle of Stafford and his estates were restored to him. [Falaise Roll, p. 46] Treacherously abandoned his partisans when he saw the outcome of the battle in doubt. His co-conspirators, Duke Robert, William earl Mortain, William Crispin and William de Ferrers were all captured and horribly tortured. [Falaise Roll, p. 92] Earl of Shrewsbury who rose in revolt in 1102 had his earldom abolished. [A History of Wales, p. 112] b.c. 1052 [Mayflower PAF] m. Agnes of Ponthieu. [Falaise Roll, p. 127] Son of Roger de Montgomery; attainted after rebelling against Henry I. [Arundel Castle, p. 22] Count of Alencon; oldest son of Roger de Montgomery II and successor in Normandy to his vast estates which he still held for his father Roger as his chief domain. In 1098 Robert purchased from William Rufus for 3000 pounds all of the family domains in England, which included the earldom of Arundel, Chichester and Shrewsbury. Described as a 'novice in arms' at the Conquest, but who might have been 40 by the Domesday, represented his father Earl Roger, and created some confusion in the records. [Shropshire and the Domesday Book in 1086 Beatrix de Builli and Robert, Earl of Eu were deprived of their inheritance, and Robert de Belleme, on some plea of kindred, obtained a grant of all the possessions of Roger de Busli from William the Red. But this merciless oppressor did not retain them long. He espoused the cause of Duke Robert, was defeated, and expelled from England by Henry I in 1102.
