!King of France (1223-26). Before his succession he assisted his father, Philip II in several campaigns to win control of French territories belonging to King John Plantagenet of England. In 1215 Louis was offered the crown of England by a group of barons in rebellion against King John. Louis led an expedition to England but was unsuccessful in claiming the throne. John died in the midst of the struggle and was succeeded by his son Henry III. The French invaders were excommunicated by the papal legate in England and were defeated in battle at Lincoln. Louis returned to France in 1217 and there took part in crusades against a dissident religious sect called the Albigenses, or Cathars. After succeeding his father as king, Louis continued Philip's policy of destroying the power of the Plantagenets in France and bringing under royal authority the provinces held by the Albigenses in the south of France. [Funk & Wagnalls]

!He inherited a France wealthier and more powerful than it had been since the days of Charlemagne. While Louis was not as capable as his father, the kingdom went forward in his reign. During his father's lifetime, Louis joined the crusade against the Albigensian heretics in southern France, and when he came to the throne in 1223 he continued the Holy War. Finally, at a great cost in human blood, the heresy was stamped out. From this time forward the power of the king was paramount in southern France. [Outline History of Mankind]

King of France from 1223-26.

The English rebel barons called upon Philip of France to send his son Louis to be their king. Louis arrived at Thanet on May 14, 1216 with a large army. Soon King John was on the run and his osuthern strongholds fell to Louis. ["Barons de Braose"
Louis of France, eldest son of Philip Augustus, accepted the English barons' offer of the English crown. He had a tenuous claim through the right of his wife Blanche of Castile, a granddaughter of Henry II. Although he sent an advance force, Louis did not cross the channel until after the winter of 1216.
Louis landed in Kent in May 1216 and soon occupied London and Winchester. With the authority of a king, he invested Gilbert de Gant with the earldom of Lincoln (Gilbert's uncle had been earl of Lincoln 1147-8, having married a niece of Ranulf de Gernons), and Gilbert, with the help of a certain Robert de Ropsley, seized Lincoln city; but they failed to take the castle which was being stoutly defended by Nichola de la Haye's garrison.
England was in grave peril at the sudden death of King John, and Louis of France would soon have occupied the empty throne if a group of John's most loyal adherents had not immediately taken control. [Lincoln Castle, p. 33-34]

!Part of the peace treaty signed between her uncle John Lackland and Philip Augustus of France. Her grandmother Eleanor of Aquitaine fetched her from Castile when she was 12 to be betrothed to Louis. They were married in Portmort in Normandy because they couldn't be married in the Ile-de-France because King Philip Augustus' misdeeds with a mistress had the kingdom under an interdict. Philip was not even allowed to attend the ceremony. Nevertheless, he provided handsomely for entertainment. The sun shone, the banners flew, and the fields rang with song and the clashing of arms from the jousting arena. [Eleanor, p. 340-1]

1185-1252. Dau. of Alfonso VIII, king of Castile, queen of Louis VIII of France, mother of Louis IX of France. Blanche was married to Louis in 1200. Regent for her son from his accession at the age of 12 in 1226 to his coming of age in 1234, she retained a strong influence over him thereafter. Blanche went to London for Henry III of England's marriage to Eleanor of Prov ence in 1236. She and Louis IX brought what was said to be the Holy Cross to Paris from the east in 1241, and built the Satine-Chapelle to house it. Blanche was again regent for Louis during his first crusade, which departed in 1248; when news of her son's capture reached her in 1250, she had the messengers hanged. She held discussions with the Pastoureaux mob when it reached Paris in 1251, but later had its leaders seized and put to death. She died tow years before Louis' return in 1254. !Called St. Louis, king of France (1226-70). His mother was regent during his minority and again from 1248 until her death in 1252. During the latter years Louis was in the Holy Land on the Seventh Crusade, one of the religious wars between Christians and Muslims. Louis and his forces were defeated and captured in Egypt in 1250, and the king remained in Syria for 4 years before returning to France. In 1258 Louis signed the Treaty of Corbeil, relinquishing to the kingdom of Aragon all French claims to Barcelona and Roussilon, in return of which the Aragonese renouced their claims to parts of Provence and Languedoc. In 1259 he signed the Treaty of Paris, by which Henry III of England was confirmed in his possession of territories in southwestern France and Louis received the provinces of Anjou, Normandy, Poitou, Maine, and Touraine. In 1270 Louis embarked on another Crusade and died en route at Tunis. He was an outstanding monarch of medieval times and was canonized in 1297. His feast day is August 25. [Funk & Wagnalls]

[Timetables of History]

!The untimely death of his father Louis VIII in 1226 seemed a likely moment for England and the French nobles to regain the territories and prerogatives lost to Philip II, for the crown of France rested on the head of 12-year-old Louis IX. But these plans were thwarted by a strong regency under the control of the widowed queen, Blanche. Despite his piety, Louis gave France strong government. When the nobles of SW France revolted against him in 1242, Louis was brought into conflict with their ally, Henry III of England. But his armies soon put down the revolt, and from 1243 to the end of the reign France
was free from internal strife. [Outline History of Mankind]

!The spread of royal power was accompanied again by a broadening of jurisdiction of the king's courts. The king's coinage was made sole currency in the royal domain, and Louis forced the nobles to allow its circulation in their realms. The improvement of the royal coinage soon made it more acceptable to the people than that produced by the local lords. [Outline
History of Mankind]

!To the reign of Louis IX may be traced the development of the French judiciary and treasury. Louis broadened the sphere of the royal courts, and became famed throughout Europe as a dispenser of justice. With the increased number of cases appealed to the king's courts, a special group of members of the Great Council was set up to hear such cases. Likewise, another group of members of the Great Council was detailed to care for the financial transactions of the king's household. [Outline History of Mankind]

!3 sons and a daughter who was Queen of Navarre. Tall, handsome, and practised in arms, he proved himself a leader of men, even a hero in battle. He was sociable in a somewhat grave and reserved style. Hard on himself, he could make allowance for others of less austere temper. His strictness of life seems to have imposed respect on those around him, even on his more worldly minded brothers, who little relished the severe manners of his court. Was accustomed to gathering his children at bedtime and reciting stories of courage and high morals. On his deathbed he left an epistle encouraging his son who was to
succeed him to be firm and fair, avoid the sins of warfare, if war becomes necessary, avoid conflagrations which harm poor, innocent folk, and do everything that it pleasing to our Lord. [Leaders & Landmarks, Vol. II, Chap. VII]

!King of the Two Sicilies (1266-85). He was the posthumous son of Louis VIII, king of France, and the brother of King Louis IX. He was given the countships of Anjou and Maine by his brother, and through marriage in 1246 he became count of Provence. In 1248 he accompanied Louis on the Sixth Crusade. In 1250 he was captured and briefly imprisoned, but later returned to Provence. By 1264 he controlled much of Piedmont. Charles agreed to aid the pope in his struggle against the Ghibellines in return for the kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In 1265 Charles invaded Italy; the following year the reigning monarch Manfred
(1232?-66) was killed in battle and Charles became king. In 1268, Conradin (1252-68), nephew of Manfred and last of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, led a revolt against Charles but was captured and executed. The king brutally suppressed the Ghibelline nobles, seizing their estates to pay his French soldiers. In 1270 Charles participated in the disastrous Seventh Crusade. In 1282 he learned of a revolt in Sicily against the French. Charles tried to reestablish his authority over the island, but was routed by Pedro III, king of Aragon
(1239-85), who destroyed his fleet. Charles died soon after, leaving his kingdom in a chaotic condition. [Funk & Wagnalls]

!Father of Charles II, King of Naples; m.1. Beatrix, Countess of Provence. [Ped. of Charlemagne, Vol. I, p. 268]

1227-85. Youngest brother of Louis IX of France; count of anjou and Provence; king of Naples and Sicily (1266-85). Charles took part in Louis IX's crusades of 1248 and 1270. He was crowned king of Naples and Sicily in 1266 by Pole Clement IV in return for supporting papal rights in southern Italy against Manfred, king of Naples and Sicily; he defeated and slew Manfred in battle the same year. As leader of the Guelph, or pro-papal faction , gained political dominance in Italy. But his harsh tax exactions in his southern kingdom provoked the Sicilian Vespers of 1282, when Sicily rose against his rule and called in the Argonese for help. The war between the Angevins and Aragonese was still in progress when Charles died. [The Plantagenet Encyclopedia, p. 46]
