Moreover, Robert, whose main interest was in his imperial fiefs and in expansion eastwards, preferred to rely for the protection of Flanders on his feudal lord, the king of France, rather than on his brother-in-law. He lengthened the breach between the two by giving his daughter in marriage to Cnut II of Denmark.
