Descendant of the Counts of Barcelona. Since the great-grandfather of Raimond Berenger IV of Provence was Raimond Berenger IV of Barcelona, there is a desire to continue consecutive numbering, making Eleanor's father RBV, but this is erroneous. He was not Count of Barcelona, and there had not been four previous Counts of Provence of that name. [Todd A. Farmerie 2 3 4 5 1

BURR, NEWLIN FOSTER LINE - 22nd ggrandmother

!Possibly the daughter of Raymond Berenger of Provence 6588. Husband's brother Charles of Anjou married the heiress of Provence, possibly another daughter. Raymond's daughter Eleanor married King Henry III of England.

!Left in charge at Damietta, while her husband was fighting in the 7th Crusade (c. 1250), while recovering from the pangs of childbirth, had to exert herself to provide her husband's ransom and to hold together the dismayed garrison. At her request an old knight had promised to kill her before she became captive to the Saracens. The government put in power by the Marmeluke revolt came to terms with its royal captive, solemn oaths being taken on either side for payment of the ransom, which the queen could not collect at once. Presently she sailed off for Acre; and the prisoners were brought down to the harbour, where their shipping awaited them. The Saracen knights got drunk on the wine there and slaughtered many of the prisoners in atonement for their drunkeness. [Leaders & Landmarks, Vol. II, p. 84-5]
