He was also intelligent, sensitive, and possessed a genius for writing poetry. In 1088, when William was 16, he married the dau. of his northern neighbor, Fulk, Count of Anjou. Her name was Ermengarde. [Eleanor of Aquitaine, p. 7] FOSTER LINE !M.2. Philippa of Toulouse, widow of King Sancho Ramirez of Aragon. Mortgaged her inheritance to support his Crusade in 1101. His expedition turned out to be anything but romantic. On Sep 5, 1101, near the town of Heraclea in Asia Minor, the Turks swept down and annihilated his entire army. William, standing on a nearby hill and weeping bitterly, watched his forces slaughtered before he fled with a few survivors, leaving behind corpses and rusting armor. At home again after his 18-month adventure, William began writing what became know as the first troubadour poetry -- love poems. His poetry sings the praises of women, but include no Virgin Marys. His view of women is wholly and undisguisedly carnal, the outcome of the lover's quest physical rather than platonic. [Eleanor of Aquitaine, p. 13] !In 1115 William brought the beautiful Viscountess Dangereuse, wife of Viscount Aimery of Chatellerault, to share his new keep in Poitou known as Maubergeonne Tower. They practiced no discretion, therefore when Philippa returned from Toulouse (where she was once again in control), her patience was sorely tried. By 1116, Philippa could stand no more of the ridiculous and demeaning position she was in and therefore retired to the Abbey of Fontevrault. William did nothing to stop her. [Eleanor, pp. 15-16] !In 1122 he lost Toulouse for the final time to 22-year-old Alphonse-Jourdain, youngest son of the Crusader Raymond of Saint-Gilles, Philippa's uncle. This time he was too weary to further pursue hie dead wife's bothersome inheritance. As the year 1126 began, William's vitality began to ebb, and after an illness, he died on Feb 10.
