NEWLIN, WAITE LINES

!King of France, 936-954. Recalled from his exile across the sea in England. Louis never trusted the intentions of Hugh Capet who was influential in placing Louis on the throne. Soon open warfare broke out during which Louis was captured. Through the aid of Otto the Great, his brother-in-law, Louis was
restored to the throne. Louis died soon afterward. [Outline History of Mankind]

!In his earlier years, he sought refuge with his maternal uncle, King Athelstan of Wessex, and hence he was called "D'outremer" (from beyond the sea) during the usurpation of Rudolph. Summoned to the throne from his English exile, he was finally protected in his dominion by the English king. The states of France sent deputies to Athelstan, on the death of Rudolph, who took oath of allegiance to Louis in the presence of Athelstan and his queen; and when the rule of the yougn Frank was disturbed by his great vassals, another treaty of alliance between the countries was entered into. !Voted to be unfit to rule because of his marriage to one of a knightly family. [WBH - France]

!Disqualified by marriage into a knightly family, and perhaps still more by his treachery during hostilities between Lothar and Otto II. At the same time the lordships of northern France, though not yet fully defined and consolidated, had for the most part reached the point at which a further prolongation of the struggle offered fewer rewards than risks, so that Charles's bid for the throne found little support.
