(Christian marriage) Gunnor to legit. their children. ... By Gunnor, Richard had [RICHARD II]." [Ref: Weis AR7:110-111]

"When in 942 William was murdered at the instigation of Count Arnulf of Flanders, his son Richard, still a minor, succeeded him. Louis IV and Hugh the Great each tried to sieze Normandy, and Louis took charge of Richard. He then ensconced himself at Rouen and Hugh took Bayeux, which still had a Scandinavian leader called Sictric. Richard escaped from his custody at Laon, retook Rouen, and called on another Viking leader, Harald of the Bassin, for help. The Normans under Richard were able to re-establish their autonomy and from 947 Richard governed in relative peace. In 965 he swore allegiance to the Carolingian king Lothar at Gisors. Richard's official marriage was to Emma, daughter of Hugh the Great; they had no children, but by his common-law wife Gunnor, a Dane, he had many. Richard II, son of Gunnor and Richard I, succeeded his father in 996, another son Robert was archbishop of Rouen from 989 to 1037 and Emma their daughter became queen of England on her marriage to Aethelred, a position she maintained after his death in 1016 by marrying Cnot (sic: Cnut/Knut...Curt). Gunnor's nephews and other relatives furthermore formed the core of the new aristocracy which developed in the course of the eleventh century. Unfortunately we know little about the internal organization and history of Normandy until the reign of Richard II, and this falls outside our period." [Ref: The Frankish Kingdoms under the Carolingians 751-987, by Rosamond McKitterick, London & NY (Longman) 1983 p238-239]

During the minority of his (William Long-Sword) successor, Duke Richard, King Louis IV -- who was making an expedition into Normandy -- was captured by the inhabitants of Rouen and handed over to Hugh the Great. From this time onwards the dukes of Normandy began to enter into relations with the dukes of France; and in 958 Duke Richard married Hugh the Great's daughter. He died in 996. (Succeeded by Richard II.) [Ref: Gordon Fisher message to soc.genealogy.medieval 6 Nov 1996]

One more minor item, ES II:11 indicates he was also buried at Fécamp.

BTW,where did you get the day & month for his birth & death? [Note: The birth date is an unsourced item I picked up on World Connect, it has at least a 1/365 chance of being right. The death date is from AR, as the source indicates (AR refers to Moriarty's Plantagenet Ancestry, p. 10-11, 13). JW]

Regards,
CurtRichard I, byname RICHARD The FEARLESS, French RICHARD SANS PEUR (b. c. 932--d. 996), duke of Normandy (942-996), son of William I Longsword.

Louis IV of France took the boy-duke into his protective custody, apparently intent upon reuniting Normandy to the crown's domains; but in 945 Louis was captured by the Normans, and Richard was returned to his people. Richard withstood further Carolingian attempts to subdue his duchy and, in 987, was instrumental in securing the French crown for his brother-in-law, the Robertian Hugh Capet. Natural son of Richard I, Duke of Normandy. Revolted against his half-brother Richard II, Duke of Normandy. Married about 1008 when Richard married. It may be that William claimed the dukedom as the elder surviving son, even though illegitimate, which in those days was not much of an objection. He was imprisoned for about 5 years, gaining his freedom by escaping, throwing himself on the ground at his brother's feet and begging his forgiveness with tears. The duke, moved with pity at the supplication of Count Raoul of Ivry (their uncle), forgave him. Founded the church of Eu for secular canons in 1001 and revolted against his half-bro. Duke Richard II between 1006 and April 1012-13, when he witnessed a charter of the duke in favour of the abbey of Jumieges, also attested by the Duchess Gonnor. [Falaise Roll, pp. 182-3]

Dau. of Herbastus de Crepon; m. Richard I; mother of Richard II and Robert. [WFT]

The parentage of Gunnor and her siblings is unknown. While some sources call her father Herfastus, this was in fact the name of her brother. She has also been claimed as the daughter of the Danish royal family, but there is no evidence for this, and the context of her coming to the attention of Richard I and the family's subsequent rise to power militates against her being a royal daughter. Douglas argued (in a 1944 English Historical Review article on the family of William Fitz Osbern), based on the donations of brother Arfast to the monastery of St. Pere, that the root of the family was in the Cotetin region of Normandy, but van Houts has suggested that the Coteotin land was granted to Arfast, rather than inherited by him. Thus we are left with the more ambiguous statements of Torigny and others that she was a member of a Norman family of Danish origins. [The Family of Gunnor, Duchess of Normandy

!Twice Queen Consort of England -- married first to Ethelred the Unready in 1002; secondly to Canute the Great in 1017. [The Bruces and the Cumyns, p. 490]

!2nd wife of Aethelred. Married in Wessex in the summer of 1002 to strengthen the ties between England and Normandy. [Chronicle of the Royal Family, p. 22-3]

!England, 1019. Queen Emma has a son, Harthacnut.
Flanders, 1037. Emma, the widow of Cnut, flees after failing to oust Harold, the son of Cnut by Aelfgifu, who has made himself king. [Chronicle of the Royal Family, p. 24]

!Emma is about 32 and Cnut is 22 at the time of their marriage. [Chronicle of the Royal Family, p. 24]

In 1017 King Knut commanded the widow of the late king Ethelred, Richard's daughter, to be brought to him so that she might become his wife. This was an admirable stroke of policy. It could hardly displease the English, promised well dynastically, and ensured the friendship of Duke Richard II of Normandy. He remained warmly attached to Aelfigu of Northampton for whom he made generous provision in Norway for their son Svein; but it was agreed that Emma was his queen and that her children by Knut should take precedence over her sons by Ehtelred and exclude the children of Aelgifu from the royal succession. [A History of the Vikings, p. 372]

Within a few months of Ethelred's death, Emma astutely married Cnut. Emma remained strongly Scandinavian in sympathy until her death in 1052 and her influence on affairs was never negligible. Herself the consort for a time of the lord of a great Scandinavian empire, she was later to see reigning in England first Harthacnut, her son by Cnut, and then Edward, her son by Ethelred. By her career and through her connections she formed a link between many of the personalities involved in the Anglo-Norman crisis of the 11th century. [The
Norman Achievement, p. 30]

Dau. of Richard I the Fearless and Gonor de Crepon; m.1. Ethelred, King of England and was mother of Edmund and Edward the Confessor; m.2. Canute, King of Denmark. [Falaise Roll, Table IV]

Regal rights in the fisheries of Bury St. Edmunds were made over to the monks, and by the same charter there were assigned, as a gift from Queen Emma, 4000 eels yearly from Lakenheath. [Victoria History of Suffolk, p. 58]

Dau. of Richard I, Duke of Normandy; m. Aethelred II and was mother of King Edward the Confessor; m.2 Canute the Great, king of England by whom she had Harthacanute, King of England. [Ancestral Roots, p. 2]
