Fourth son of John the Good, king of France (1350-64); present at
Poitiers (1356), where he earned his nickname for bravery in trying to
save his father. Granted duchy of Burgundy (1363) after the Capetian line
of dukes became extinct (1361). m. (1369) Margaret, daughter of Louis II
de Male, Count of Flanders. On death of King Charles V of France (1380),
appointed one of four guardians of Charles VI. Put down Flemish revolt
(1382); inherited Flanders, Artois, Rethel, Nevers, Franche-Comte, and
some lands in Champagne (1384). Appointed, with his brother Jean de
France, duc de Berry, as regent to govern France when Charles VI became
insane (1392); formed alliance with England (1396); supported Pope
Boniface IX.
