After planning for the crusade, Thiabald of Champagne took ill and was dying. Since he had been one of the triumvariate, the first reaction was to try to replace him, but after the Duke of Burgandy and the Count of Bar-le Duc had refused to take his place the position was offered to Marquis Boniface of Montferrat, the brother of William and brother in law of Sibylla of Jerusalem. His other Renier had married a Greek Princes and had ranked as a Caesar in the Byzantine empire before being murdered in 1183.
