ALIA also called HUGH THE WHITE, French HUGUES LE GRAND, or HUGUES LE BLANCHugh THE GREAT,also called HUGH THE WHITE, French HUGUES LE GRAND, or HUGUES LEBLANC (d. June 16/17, 956), duke of the
Franks, count of Paris, and progenitor of the Capetian kings of France. He was the mostpowerful man in the kingdom of France (West Francia) during thereign of Louis IV d'Outremer and the early years
of KingLothair.Son of a king (Robert I), father of another (Hugh Capet), andbrother-in-law of three more (Rudolf of France, Athelstan ofEngland, and Otto of Germany), Hugh possessed such
vastterritories that he could easily have assumed the crown on thedeath of Rudolf in 936. Preferring to work from behind thethrone, he instead suggested the accession of Louis IV, son ofthe deposed
Charles III the Simple. Louis proved no puppet, however, and his reign saw an almost constant struggle betweenKing and Duke in which all the great magnates of France, Otto Iof Germany, and the dukes
of Lorraine were at one time oranother involved. In 945 Louis fell into Hugh's hands and wasincarcerated for a year before pressure from abroad and publicopinion at home brought his release.
Excommunicated by Frenchand German councils and by the Pope, Hugh finally submitted toLouis in 951.On the death of the King three years later, Hugh again turneddown the opportunity to become king,
plumping instead forLouis's young son, Lothair; but for his last two years Hugh waseffectively the ruler of France. Related Propaedia TopicsThe West Frankish kingdom (France): dynastic rivalry

Weis" "Ancestral Roots. . ." (53:20), (101:20), (106:20), (107:19), (141:21),
(144A:20). Count of Paris 956-996; King of France 987-996.

Eldest son of Hugh the Great, he was a founder of the Capetian House and
lay abbot of the Abbeys of St. Martin of Tours and of St. Denis. His
surname "Capet" may derive from his abbot's cape. He was elected king by
the assembly of Senlis, but he secured the succession for his descendants
by suspending the feudal right of election. He is buried in front of the
altar in the Basilica of the Trinity at St. Denis, France. {Born in winter
of 941 per "Ancestral Roots..." [Balt., 1992] 53-20.}

Ancestral File Number: HPFX-Z5

Hugues Capet, king of France, and founder of the Capetian dynasty, son of Hugh the Great, count of Paris, whom he succeeded in 956. His lordship over many fiefs around Paris and Orléans made him the virtual ruler of France, and when King
Louis V of France, the last of the Carolingian line, died without an heir in 987, Hugh's numerous vassals enabled him to win the election to the throne, defeating the Carolingian candidate, Charles, duke of Lothringen. Charles and many other
great nobles of the realm attempted to resist his authority but, through force of arms and by judicious purchasing of allegiance, as well as through the support of the church, of which he was a devout member, Hugh established a measure of order within his kingdom. He had his son, Robert the Pious (later Robert II), elected and crowned his associate and successor in 988, thereby confirming the house of Capet, which ruled France until 1328.
