Thomas Patterson, son of Robert (R) Patterson and Sarah. Born between 1740 and 1745 at Linville's Creek, Rockingham, Va, died between 1807 and 1810 at Buncombe Co.,NC 1790 Census records for Thomas Pattersons are as follows: Name: Peterson, Thomas Year: 1790 County: 96th DIST., Newberry Co. State: SC Page: 080 Location: Comments: 1-3-5-0-0 ** this page can be viewed online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/census/1790/transcriptions/080.gif** Name: Patterson, Thomas Year: 1790 County: Charleston District, St. Bartholomew's Parish -Dorchester State: SC Page: 035 Location: Comments: 2-3-2-0-6 ** this page can be viewed online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/census/1790/transcriptions/035.gif** I'm 100% sure that this latter entry, the one inthe Charleston District, is the father of John Patterson. It appears that, based on the 1800 and 1810 Buncombe NC censuses, that Thomas may have had as many as 5 sons and at least 1 daughter, but that is not confirmed as yet. His oldest son John had slaves in 1810 and 1820, so it's likely that Thomas may have had slaves as well, but again this is not known for sure. According to this 1790 Dorchester census, that Thomas had 6 slaves. If the Robert Pattersonof 1800 & 1810 Buncombe closest to John Patterson, and the Robert of 1820 Haywood closest to John, was the brother of John, that Robert was most likely born around 1770, perhaps as early as 1767, or as late as 1774. That would make the 1790 Thomas Patterson of Charleston District a more likely candidate astheir father. I cannot find a Robert Patterson listed separately in the 1790census, so I assume that he was still living with his father then. His firstchild was not born until right after 1790 so that is very possible that he was still with Thomas. BUT, I would think that he was clearly older than 16 then. Therefore, if Robert WAS with Thomas, it couldn't have been the Thomas of Newberry. It's also likely that the James Patterson of 1810 Buncombe who lived between Robert and John was a younger brother, and very likely to have been between 10-16 at the time of the 1790 census. There was also an Andrew Patterson who witnessed a Buncombe Co NC deed involving John Patterson buying land from Richard Morrow on 8-02-1802. This was witnessed by Daniel Ponder, James Morrow, and Andrew Patterson. Daniel Ponder was the brother-in-law of Thomas and therefore uncle of John. James Morrow may have been a son or brotherof Richard Morrow, but he may have also been a future son-in-law of John Patterson, but that has not been proved yet. As for Andrew Patterson, he was tooold to be a son of John, but could very well have been a brother. At this time, I'm inclined to believe that this 1790 entry of Thomas Patterson in Charleston District, St. Batholomew - Dorchester Parish, SC was the father of John, Robert, James, Andrew, and a daughter also. Again, this has NOT been proven, but this is what I'm working on to try to prove. If this is the same Thomas, then there was another son as well based on that census record. Thomas was in Buncombe Co., NC in 1800 with his wife and daughter. Also, John and Robert Patterson were there with their families. It is still unclear where Jamesand Andrew were in 1800. Perhaps still in the Charleston, SC area? This should be checked into. Wes Patterson May 2002 ***** July 2002 notes: There isoverwhelming evidence that this Thomas Patterson (son of Robert of York SC, and father of John of 1800, 1810 Buncombe) was a Loyalist (or Tory) during the Revolutionary War. In other words, he opposed the Revolution. Thomas was not the only Loyalist from the York Co SC area. Here is a list of Tories duringthe Revolution (from York Co SC) according to General William Bratton (See York County Quarterly, Vol 8 , September 1996). This list was compiled in 1783 by Gen. Bratton: Peeter Juland Jr. [Julian] Benjamin Juland [Julian] Peeter Juland [Julian] Wm. Juland [Julian] Daniel Ponder Jary Juland [Jeremiah Julian] Robert Black James Irvin Wm. Patterson Married between 1762 and 1764 at Most likely in the Clark's Fork of Bullocks Creek area of York Co, SC to: unknown Born between 1740 and 1745 at Most likely Linville's Creek area Rockingham Co, Virginia, died after 1810 at Possibly in Buncombe Co.,NC William Cravens MAY HAVE BEEN the father-in-law of Thomas Patterson. William and Jane Cravens lived in old Augusta Co Va during the 1730's until the early1760's, in the Linville's Creek area around modern day Harrisonburg Va. According to a deed in 1766 when Samuel and Lydia Stewart sold their Augusta Co Va land, it appears that the Stewarts had lived right next to William and JaneCravens, and also next to "the Pattersons". There is plenty of evidence to show that this was Robert Patterson, father of Thomas. Robert and Madge Cravens Black lived next to them as well. The five people who signed this deed wereWilliam Cravens, Samuel and Lydia Stewart, and Robert and Madge Cravens Black. At the time of this deed in 1766, the Stewarts were already living in NC. Here is a transcribed version of this deed: Samuel Stewarts Deed Samuel Stewart (born 1710; died before 1780) Deeds of Augusta County, Virginia, pages 55-56 Sold 143 acres of land for five shillings August 11, 1766 This indenture made the 11 Day of August in the year of our Lord 1766 between SAMUEL STEWART of the Province of NORTH CAROLINA yeoman of the County of ROWAN of the onepart and JACOB COPLIN of the County of Augusta and colony of Virginia of theother part witnesseth that the said SAMUEL STEWART for in consideration of the sum of 5 shillings current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said JACOB COPLIN at or before the sealing and delivery of these present the receipt whereof hereby acknowledged hath granted, bargained and sold unto the said JACOB COPLIN and to his heirs forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Augusta on the south forks of Linnville Creek containing 143 acres granted to said Stuart by patent bearing the date 5 Sept. 1749 bounded as follows: Beginning at a white oak and a red oak on the east side of the branch and runneth thence north 80 degrees and west 19 poles to Ralsons line and with the same 48 degrees west 136 poles to his corner andthence with his line North 3 degrees West 111 poles to a white oak thence north 80 west 53 poles to a white oak and thence south 10 degrees west 68 polesto a white oak in Pattersons line and with the same south 19 East 119 poles to a white oak corner to said Pattersons and south 80 west and 99 poles to a white oak and thence north 24 degrees East 180 poles to the beginning. They would have come from a printed copy of the ordinary court records. I don't have all my research with me right now so I can't tell you an author or publisher but I thought it might be relevant to the Pattersons you had in Rabun Co. Do you know who the Robert Patterson is? If you're interested I can give you more details on the source later. Maybe you can give me information, though.
