man John Thomas Menefee‏‎, son of Jonas MENEFEE and Elizabeth "Betsey" "Betsy" CHEW‏.
Born ‎± 1765 at Rappahannock Co., VA---to Henry Co. VA. in 1770's, died ‎± 1847 at Al.‎, approximately 82 years, buried ‎ at Decatur, Alalbama, large headstone
Copy of Headstone & inscription, He was given a land grant jointly with Christian Roads of 1280 acres in Sullivan Co., TN. [Tn Deed Book Vol. 1 , pp. 307-308, State of NC 406] Sullivan Co. is in upper East TN.; on the whole, the two gentlemen were close friends for life. Possibly he may have married Christian's daughter [2nd wife if he were married twice]. John figured prominently in East TN. politics, being one of the participants in the "Lost State of Franklin" and later a member of the TN state legislature. In his 70's he sold his massive holdins in Tn and moved to Morgan Co., Al, becoming the first judge inthat state. He is buried, with a large monument in Decatur, Alabama. Most of the south TN and AL Menefees moved at one time or another to Texas. Thus the speculation that William Christian is a child of John Thomas.
