I can find no source to confirm this, but supposedly a professional genealogist made this connection. The work was done for my Uncle Seldon Menefee in the late 1940's. I do not have his work. Glenna Inglis See MyFamily.com, Vetty Decker's site for extensive research on Taylors. Others support descendancy fromTaillefers. James Taylor had a seal ring which is still in possession of a descendent and was brought by James when he emigrated to the colonies. It matches the description of of the Taylor Crest, created from Taillefer; the theory is Taillefer's shortened name to Taylor @ 1400 Married 1666 at VA. JONAS MENEFEE Her mother was Martha Taylor [b. 1-17-1701/02- d. bef 1761] and her father was Thomas Chew [no dates]. Her maternal grandfather [my 8th great grandfather] was James Taylor II of Royal Governor Spotswood's "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" who was among the first explorers of the Virginia frontier. He gained the patent to much of what is now Orange County, VA, which is quite close to Culpeper, if you are familiar with the area. She would have been a first cousin, once removed, to both presidents James Madison and Zachary Taylor. Her siblings were Alice, Colby, Frances, Hannah, James, Joseph, Larkin, Mildred, Samuel, and Thomas. Martha Taylor's parents: James Taylor II b. March 14,1673/74 d. Ray in his 1950 publication "Tennessee Cousins, A History of Tennessee People" elaborated on the Lincoln County and their possible lineage from James Taylor "of Caroline County" as he was known, and who, according to family tradition was twice married, and came to Virginia from Cumberland County, England. This information was again stated in "From Log Cabins to the White House" by Mary Taylor Brewer. This compiler has been unable to prove or disprove the descendancy of Edmund from James of Carlisle. Speculation exists that Edmund married Sarah Brooking. Another speculation exists is that Edmund married his first cousin, Sarah Gregory, daughter of Burgess Richard Gregory of Essex Co., VA. who was brother to Mary Bishop Gregory Taylor and uncle to Edmund. Richard Gregory left a will in 1701 in Essex Co. that mentions his daughter, Sarah. She inherited land as the will provided "700 acres lying upon the head of Mattaponi adjacent land of Capt. James Taylor". In 1719 Edmund and Sarah Taylor sold to Henry Reeves land called "Gregorie's swamp". I think he is the son of Anthony Taylor of the Rev. who died in 1782 of smallpox who's son William Taylor traveled west with William Sexton living both of them in Whitley Co. Ky. William sexton married Mary Polly Price wife of Samuel Taylor. Littleberry came later when he became of age. I think he headed towards the Mississippi by way of central ky. Then at the Ohio in Western Ky. Hopefully they located each other in central Ky. before he went on. before the civil war people could write better so maybe they did stay in touch by way of the churchwardens, before he set out for the west from northern Va. from the Erasmus Taylor Bible: John was born 9-27 or 29, 1692 and died young.
