John appeared in Dorchester as early as 1635; joined the church in 1635. May have been the brother of Symon Whitcomb; belief has gained ground among those who have studied records of immigrant John, second son of John and Anne [Harper] Whitcomb. John moved to Scituate, MA., where he owned land. He was made Constable, and on a list to bear arms 1643. He was admitted freeman 6-3-1652. Removed to Lancaster, MA., when 1652 town was laid out he invested money. He and son John Jr. were among the founders. He died after 30 some years in the Colonies, aged 74, buried Old Graveyard, Lancaster, no headstone. His oldest child was born in England. He had 5-6- sons and 3 daughters. died intestate. Wife and children mutually agreed as to division; approved by court. Widow made her will 5-12-1671; daughter Mary executrix.

"The Search Series", volume 18, pp. 150-152 John Whitcomb of Taunton, Somerset is listed but not his ancestry. Robin Bush has now established his ancestry, origins from manorial records of Taunton Late Priory. This manor covers the area immediately to the north-east of the old borough of Taunton which lay within the the parish of Taunton, St. James at which four of John Whitcombe's children were baptized. This work establishes that John's parents were Thomas Whetcombe and Johanna Pope and John's ancestry can be traced back to the brothers and sisters of his father. Also, John's mother can be traced back to her grandfather, John Pope of Taunton. This is from research published in 1997 [The Mary and John Clearing House, "Search for the Passengers of the Mary and John 1630", volume 26, pp. 61-73 and gives his ancestry as Thomas and Johanna Pope. Charlotte Whitcomb : pp 34, 49-50

"When in 1654 John removed his family from Scituate to Lancaster, MA., Robert remained behind. From the fact Robert remained and was given real estate, it is reasonable to suppose him to be one of the older sons. Robert Whitcombe was the first to settle at "Beechwood" in the Beeches, a family place at Sciyuate where several generations of Whitcombes have resided."

He possibly stayed with his oldest sister Catherine Elmes, who settled there, having been married 10 years before. He married, 1660, by a Quaker preacher, Henry Hobson, in Rhode Island, but this marriage was pronounced unlawful by the Puritan authorities so they were remarried 3-9-1660.

It is recorded by several authorities that in 1654, Robert received from his father a half interest in the Conihasset lands and it is probable that this was recognized
