He was admitted Freeman in Watertown on May 6, 1646. 15 March1648 he purchasedfrom Edward Lamb of Watertown, a house with 8acres of land, and three other lots, and six acres of upland, onthe same day, from John Fiske. On January 6, 1680 or 1681, hewas elected Constable or Tax Collector of Watertown, but refusedto take the oath. In the same year he sold his land inWatertown to his eldest son, Samuel Stearns, Sr. It is supposedthat soon after he moved with his son, Shubael Stearns, Sr., toa part of Lynn, called Lynn End, which later became known asLynnfield, Massachusetts.

An inventory of his estate was made June 6, 1694, totalingforty-two pounds, twelve shillings, which left his family soindigent, they were recorded in town records of June 16, 1694 asreceiving temporary aid from the selectmen. Mehitable Stearns,still a widow, settled his estate in July 1696. She had her sonbaptized by Rev. Mr. Angier in 1698. Nothing further is knownof the widow or her sons
