There is good evidence that Philemon Whale came from Chickney, Co. Essex, England. It is probable that he came to Sudbury in company with his son-in-law John Moore very soon after its settlement in 1638. We was a weaver by trade but after he came to America he was a farmer. He was one of the early grantees of Sudbury. He was made freeman 10My1648. He owned land in various parts of town but his early home is supposed to have been not far from the head of the mill-pond in what is now Wayland. Afterward, he built a house in the neighborhood of "Rice's Spring". His surname has been perpetuated in the town of Sudbury for almost three centuries by a bridge or culvert at the head of the mill-pond which still is known as "Whale's Bridge". On 20My1657 "Philemon Whale, weaver" sold to Peter Bent, yeoman, of Sudbury 20 acres of upland in Sudbury which he had bought of Thomas White. The deed was witnessed by "Tho Nois" and Peter King and was filed with Simon Willard, Recorder, another ancestor. On 29 October of the same year he sold to John Haynes 10 acres of upland located west of Sudbury Great River. On 6F1669 he and his wife Elizabeth sold to Thomas Rice of Marlboro all the Town Rights which they had bought of Thomas White and, on 2Jy1674, they sold to him Town Rights which they had bought of John Knight. On 1Mr1669 he sold to Joseph Freeman of Sudbury, for 30 pounds, all 130 acres in the new land grant in Sudbury, it being the 18th lot in the second squadron of the new grants, land of Edmund Rice on the south and lands of Widow Loker (both ancestors) on the north. His wife Elizabeth "resigned up her rights" in the land on 30My1671. His will, dated 19Ja1675, proved 4Ap1676, bequeathed to wife Elizabeth all moveables and household stuff, all cattle, debts owing to me, 11 acres in the Great River meadow bounded by the meadow formerly granted to Goodman Ward, 4 acres of upland on Pine Plaine; and the use during her natural life of the house and other lands in Sudbury which, after her death, were to go to the four sons of his daughter Elizabeth Moore, viz. William, jacob, Joseph, and Benjamin Moore. Inventory, dated 28Mr1676, totaled 87.03.06 pounds, including dwelling-house, home-lot and orchard valued at 20 pounds; 27 1/2 acres of meadow valued at 30 pounds; 4 acres of upland at 2 pounds and Sword and Halbert at 5s.
