Eli Mathis, son of Jeremiah Mathis and Hannah Andrews. Born Dec 19, 1759, died Apr 15, 1839, 79 years He was a member of the Society of Friends and one of the strictest of that sect. He was a long time Elder of the Meeting. He was also a useful member in the community, in which he lived by his firmness and uprightness. He gained the respect and confidence of his neighbors, many of whom sought his counsel and entrusted their business in his competent hands. He lived to a good old age, and died as he lived a consistent member of the religious society to which he belonged. Married May 20, 1790 (48 years married) to: Judith Willets, daughter of Timothy Willets Sr. and Mary Birdsall. Born Jun 7, 1770, died Apr 21, 1839, 68 years Children: 1. Charles MathisBorn Sep 16, 1791 He never married. He was drowned when quite a young man. 6. Mary MathisBorn Aug 13, 1802, died Jan 4, 1850, 47 years Died unmarried. She was an estimable woman. From her youth up, she was remarkable for an unusual steadyness of character. She was a member of the Society of Friends, and one of the strictest of the strict. Having a wise father and a very amiable mother, she was trained up " in the way she should go", and she never departed from it. |
