The will of Humphrey Basse was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, England on June 06, 1616.
He was a Haberdasher of Mynsyng Lane.

He was the father of Nathaniel Basse, Gentleman who settled in Virginia, and who established Basses Choice just outside Smithfield, Virginia.

In the Jamestowne records there is also mention of a Captain Nathaniel Basse who settled in Virginia.

There is doubt by some scholars as to the correct father of Nathaniel Basse as identified in the Sermon Book of John Basse.

Nevertheless because Nathaniel Basse clearly had a child by the name of Humphrey Basse, we show Humphrey Basse as the father of Nathaniel Basse.

See the following notes regarding Nathaniel Basse.

The children of Humphrey Basse are those as listed in his will.

Our earliest documentation of a Bass ancestor is Humphrey Basse, a merchant of London, England. It has been reported that Humphrey Basse's father was William Bass born in 1520 and his wife was Mary Carkin, born about 1525. Humphrey's children from 1589 to 1602 were baptised at the Church of St. Gabriel, Fenchurch Street, London.

Humphrey is described as a "marchant in the High Street, Haberdasher, Girdler, French Merchant against Mynsyng Lane."

Nathaniel, son of Humphrey was baptized 29 December 1589, and Thomas son of Humphrey was baptized 21 February 1602.
Thomas died in 1603.

In 1605, the family of Humphrey Basse is found at St. Helen's Church, Boshipgate, London where five more children were baptized.

Humphrey Basse was buried at St. Helen's Church 04 June 1616. His wife Mary was buried there 22 July 1616.

St. Helen's Church today is located in the financial district of London. It has been damaged by the Irish Republican Army.
St. Fenchurch is north of Mincing land and Bishopgate is also north of St. Helen's Church.

Mincing Lane is located between London Bridge and the Tower of London.

The will of Humphrey Basse was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 06 June 1616 and names his wife Mary , sons Nathaniel, Richard, Samuel, Humphrey, and Luke. It also mentions daughters Abigail, Hester, Sarah, and Mary Walthall, wife of Luke Walthall.
It mentions the father in law Charles Pressy, brother William, and brother Thomas late deceased.

On 16 December 1617, comission was granted to Mary Walthall daughter of the deceased to administer according to the tenor of the will since Mary Basse, the relect and the executix of the will was deceased, and that Luke Walthall executor of Mary Basse was also deceased.

The will of Mary Basse mentioned son Nathaniel Basse and son in law Luke Walthall.

Humphrey Basse's wife was Mary Bushier, daughter of Dominick Buschier, a native of Italy. Dominick appears on several lists of aliens during the reign of Elizabeth the First.

The wife of Dominick Buschier was Jane Genevieve, a native of Roanne, France. Roanne was located near the French-Swiss border.
Dominick died in 1592 and Jane married Charles Pressy.

The will of Jane Buschier Pressy is dated 03 March 1620 and lists "my son Constantine Buschier, Anne and Jane daughters of my son John Buschier, and also Nathaniel Basse, Richard, Humphrey, and Samuel Basse, bothers of the said Nathaniel and sons of my daughter Mary Basse."
