BIOGRAPHY: Andrew Shields, son of Hanna and James Shields, married Rose Mc Kenna October 6, 1872 at St. Peter and Paul Church in Brooklyn, by Rev. John B. Fagan. He was born around 1832 and died July 14, 1901 at 6:30 A.M. Andrew enlisted in the Navy from the Brooklyn Navy yard on Sept. 9, 1864, as a coal passer on the U.S.S. Meteor. He was discharged at New Orleans on Sept. 5, 1865.
They had one daughter named Mary Shields born April 8, 1877.

BIOGRAPHY: Andrew's discription at 60 yrs.: 5'4 1/4" tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair, & blue eyes. A scar on the forearm and a lump in the groin, or a rupture. Andrew was injured in the right leg, just below the knee joint, during the engagement of the taking of the Spanish Fort, Mobile, Alabama. Also contracted chronic diarhea from the drinking water and hardships at the same engagement.

BIOGRAPHY: Andrew served on the ships: USS No. Carolina, Meteor and Arthur.

According to Arthur Shields' interview with Peggy Eberhardt, Andrew or (Mr.) Shields was a "very hard taskmaster" and he used to horsewhip the children - all but Frank, most likely due to his small size and his having only one eye.
