Thomas Eastin +e, son of Jean or Joachim? D'+ Estaing and Nm+ X. Born 1725 at Devonshire, England, died Jun 14, 1793 at Albemarle Co., VA, 67 or 68 years The information handed down by my family holds that our D`Estaing/Eastin lineage was of a family of French Huguenots who intermarried with Swiss, Irish, and English during their long exodus down the Rhine River, fleeing after Edict of Nantes was revoked. The first US Census, Albemarle Co., 1785, shows aThomas Easton (Eastin) with "5 white souls" in his household. ____________________________________________ Thomas Eastin was a resident of Albemarle County in 1778, according to records. "..at age 53, he bought land from Thomas Walker. He was still a legal resident of Albemarle Co at the time he sold the land to Chiles Tyrell in 1850 (Albemarle County Deed Records)." This land comprised 171 acres "on top of the little mountains". According to "Albemarle County of Other Days", by Mary Rawlings, (Charlottesville, VA, The Michie Co. 1925, pg 22), "Nicholas Meriwether was the original grantee of a large tract of land which was partitioned as early as 1739, a large portion 'east' of South West Mountain going to the widow of Nicholas Meriwether III. When the widow Meriwether married Dr. Thomas Walker, this portion of the original grant became known as 'Castle Hill'". This property was later subdivided many times, "resulting in plantations named 'Cismont', 'Castalia,' 'Music Hall', 'Belvoir', 'Kilmnloch', 'Merrie Hill', and others." Source (link below) states that "we know he once lived or certainly owned property on the Fluvanna and Albemarle County lines, as his grandson, Stephen L. Eastin, subsequently homesteaded property in Fluvanna County from which Monticello may still be seen 'when the leaves have fallen.'" SOURCES: B. HISTORICAL HI-LITES: Thomas shares his birth year with the great lover Casanova, Nicolas Appert (father of canning), and Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot, who designed and built the first automobile. Married 1744 at Albemarle, Savannah Co., VA (48 or 49 years married) to: Sarah Whitlock +e, daughter of Thomas+ Whitlock and N.N.. Born 1728 at Scotland, died 1793 at Albemarle, VA, 64 or 65 years Children: 1. Samuel EastinBorn after 1744 S103. 2. Walker EastinBorn after 1744 S103. 3. John+ EastinBorn 1746 at Albemarle, VA, died 1837 at Madison Co., KY, 90 or 91 years The Virginia Genealogical Society (cited below) discussed an interesting Virginia estate case that eventually involved a John Easton. The will of a Mr. William Woffendall, recorded 10/26/1747, King George Co., VA. had stipulated that his wife Tabitha (Payne?) would receive his estate and upon her death his estate would be distributed to the following persons: Richard Drake, Benjamin Drake, Henry Drake, Mary Sims, Sarah Clayton, and Margaret Dodd. However, Tabitha subsequently married two more times (her third husband being George Strother, 1st cousin to William Woffendall) and passed away in 1790. 50+ years after William Woffendall died, 1791, the heirs of those six individuals named above received shares in the estate. John Easton was named as a plaintiff (on behalf of his wife "Eliza" (nee Drake - heir to Henry Drake) along with James Drake and "Richard Drake`s son". They each received a little over 3 English Ls. I am not yet certain it is THIS John Eastin/Easton, but place and time do fit. I have seen family trees that state that Elizabeth was married to a William Easton whose father was Richard Easton, so they may be a different couple altogether (interestingly, it was an Easton), but it is John who is named in this settlement. This may explain why I have found difficulty in tracing Mary Orchard and matters concerning birth years for Mary (see Mary`s insert.) According to the information available to me at this time, John`s youngest 4 children seemed to arrive starting in 1792 (a year after the settlement) after a 10-year "break" in children, suggesting a second marriage, possibly to Eliza Drake. If you have information that might help me to clarify this, I would appreciate hearing from you! Interestingly, "Count D`Estaing" is also discussed as a separate item in Virginia Genealogy (pg 49) in reference to a Mr. Joseph Martin, who apparently sailed from Brest, France under the command of D`Estaing after serving in the French military. Augustine Eastin, ReverendBorn Sep 8, 1750 at Albemarle Co., VA, died Nov 14, 1833 at Bourbon Co., KY, 83 years Augustine was a Baptist preacher. At one time he was arrested and confined in the jail at Richmond, Virginia, for preaching to the British soldiers; His persistance threatened to get him shot. Shortly after being discharged from the Army of the American Revolution, Augustine, a minister, left Virginia in 1784 with a party of emigants desiring to settle in Kentucky. The wife of General James Taylor was with the Eastin party. Another large party of emigrants caught up with them one evening, and they were encouraged to band with his group, as Eastin`s party had seen signs that Indians were near and might attack. Sentries would be posted. The other party dismissed the warning, but later that night, more than 40 emigrants were killed and/or scalped. Augustine Eastins party apparently made it safely to Kentucky. Augustine was witness to the wills of Andrew Barton (drawn 06/16/1829, wife Jane), Jesse Bowles (drawn 03/29/1820), and Nathaniel Parish (drawn 04/13/1810). NOTE: I have seen some information stating that this Philip was a son of Philip and not Thomas; however, in the account of Richard Eastin`s military career (brother of Philip, son of Philip), Richard served for a time with his "cousin Philip", so there may be more information to come.
