Its for Windows only at the moment. I'd like to see a Mac release. I
*think* it's the evolution of the "Archon 2001" game that was
mentioned on here an age ago. Apparently, it uses the same game
timings as the original 8-bit versions, but with improved visuals and
audio. I'd forgotten how great a game Archon is. Whilst I'd love to
see Archon in 3D, this great remake will keep me happy for now...

I tried Xarchon and it just didn't play well. It simply didn't feel
like Archon (and I'm not talking about the rather poor graphics).
Archon: Evolution's engine is apparently based on the original 8-bit
code (source: Wiki), which would explain why it matches the original
so closely.

I really don't like the Sorceress icon in Archon: Evolution though, so
I'm trying to create a new one for it. The developers welcome any
help, as the original artist is no longer on board.

How about Archon Ultra? I think it's the best PC version.

I had high hopes for "Ultra", but the battles are too slooooow.
Everything just feels sluggish when compared with the pace of the
original. I know the developers tried to create a bigger battlefield,
but the switching between resolutions was off putting.

The board looks very nice in Ultra, and I like the idea of the dual
attack though. I just miss the pace of the original. That's probably
why I prefer "Evolution" - It matches the pace of the original exactly.

from.
So far, no download for me. Is that file anywhere else?

Before downloading the web site shows you a code then asks you to enter the
"letters that are attached to a cat".
What the F*** is that??? As far as I can see, all letters have a stupid cat
on them. Whatever I type in doesn't work.

I officially hate that site.

Only 4 of them have cats. Other have dogs. :) Type only the 4 letters with
the cats. They can be rotated, so look for the round head or tail parallel
with the body (cats). :]

I had to go and take a look just to see what you were talking about. The
security system is even worse than I expected having read your description!

I stared and stared, and I can't tell which ones have cats attached to the
letters either. (In fact I'm not even sure I can read the letters at all,
regardless of whether they have cats attached) And all that was after I had
to wait 3 minutes before it would even let me attempt to enter a code.

That does indeed appear to be the stupidest security system ever created.

I have visions of me doing a screen capture then pasting it into paint shop

Well I eventually got the download.
It was luck, be sure. I went back to the site and it took 3 tries.
But, I never saw the difference between the dogs & cats. In fact, some of
them were so obscured you couldn't tell what animal it was.

I *think* the site probably does this to help convince the user to get a
paid account to avoid that security system.
I'd bet money on it.

Thanks though!

You wouldn't have anyone to bet against, probably. ;)

> Thanks though!

There's another tip for you. Rapidshare has so called "happy hour" mode
when all the security checks as well as waiting with countdowns are
turned off for "free users". Overhere in Europe (GMT+1/2) it's roughly
from midnight till 9 AM or so. I suppose it relates to bandwidth usage
by Rapidshare servers.

P.S. Sorry for off-topic replies to everyone else. :)

Not quite like that. Their problem was in software that was able to OCR
the image and thus allow free users to use unattended download
capability, which is something that they provide for premium users only.

The cats and dogs logic was the only way to stop that particulat
software from functioning :)

I will second that about Ultra being too sloooooow. I bought it because of my
love for the 8-bit versions. My kids had played it on the XL and were excited
about Ultra until they played it. The experience was more like a chess game
and not a video game and they got bored with it and so did I.
