wasn't I imagine there's a healthy number of folks here who've seen the
movie ...

Who was the protagonist, would you say, Gene Kelly as Don
Lockwood or Donald O'Connor as Cosmo Brown?

Don Lockwood gets the screen time and the romantic subplot, the
traditional markers of protagonist-hood, but Cosmo Brown does a lot more
of pushing the plot forward.

What do you think, sirs?

I'd say it's pretty clearly Debie Reynolds as Cathy.
