The book is UBIK by Phil Dick. A must for those who find Dick
tolerable, recommended for everyone else.

I enjoyed the TRUE GAME series quite a bit. Good, fun adventure fantasy,
with enough interesting ideas to keep my head busy. She IS, I think,
improving as a writer, but from the beginning she kept you turning the
pages, which is more than I can say for many established pros.
