We recently bought a few boxes of Maxell double sided double density
floppies and found a few bad sectors on several of them when formatted 
under PC-DOS.  Is this to be expected?  Does this indicate anything
about the rest of the diskette (e.g., is it likely to develop more bad 
sectors after being used)?  Do manufacturers and/or retailers make any
sort of guarantees about the diskettes at least as far as being OK when
the box is opened?

A few bad sectors on a floppy diskette is NOT acceptable. You only
have 360K bytes on a double-sided disk. Take them back and get another
brand (or different lot of the same brand). They should be guaranteed.

A few bad sectors on floppy disks are certainly NOT normal.  I shun
any manufacturer whose diskettes have ANY bad sectors.

Which is why I'm surprised that you had problems with Maxell diskettes.
I've used them for years and rarely have any problems.  Anyway, just
send them back and Maxell will replace them.  They are warranted for 
life.

A hard disk is another story.  Usually a hard disk will come with some bad
sectors (which your OS will take care of).  You should not continue to find
bad sectors after formatting for the first time, though.  If you do, you
should have your disk serviced.
