Hi all,

Would appreciate some technical advice here.

About 15 years ago I was starting to get a bit of a collection of vintage
compact Mac's and tinkered with them on a basic level with help from the
Larry Pina books.
About the same time, I was lucky enough to buy a Mac Plus (Beige colour)
from a recycling place for a paltry sum of $5.00. After bring it home, it
didn't boot up so I opened it up
and discovered this unknown board? inside it (see photos). *It wasn't
connected and was still in its packaging* so I removed it . Subsequently, I
just needed to connect a few wires together and surprise, surprise....the
unit booted up perfectly!

I'm very curious what this board might be....and suggestions and knowledge
would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Phil

It’s a 68030 processor upgrade (with 68882 coprocessor). A very nice upgrade and should bring it close to an SE-30 in performance.

I’m not quite sure what the double-row header on the right side is for.

Some accelerators of that era included an expansion port for additional features, for example an additional (>4MB) RAM board.

There could be markings on the board if you remove the 256KB SIMMs, or on the other side.

I would carefully check the board, top and bottom, for any telltale markings such as Novy, ImagePro, MicroMac, Dove, Radius or the others offering CPU accelerators for the Plus. The right side thingy is likely some kind of expansion slot as Jeff mentioned. The photo reminds me of an ImagePro I once owned that featured a video option for a large external monitor.  --Glen

Hi Glenn....no other markings that I can see with a magnifier.

Gee Phil, you might remove the seal so we can see the processor on the
right, I would not worry about voiding the warranty.

My bet is that it is a 68030 accelerator, with a co-processor. It has to
use its own SIMMs because the on-board SIMMs on the original motherboard is
too slow. There should a control panel device to control the accelerator,
including enabling memory over 4MB, etc.

Apparently this power supply is associated with the accelerator card.
Probably to drive the internal fan that also came with the package.

It looks like both the '030 and the '882 are rated for 20MHz and were manufactured in mid-1989. The crystal oscillator can beside them, however, is set to 16MHz.

There really weren’t many ‘030 accelerators for the Plus. Could be a Micromac

*Hi ….I want to thank you all for your knowledge and expertise on this
particular computer and the unusual find inside the unit completely wrapped
and, not connected…. of a 68030 accelerator, with a co-processor??? *

*Remember, I am a layman….so a final summary of what this really is would

The accelerator board was a way to turn an older Macintosh like that into
something close in performance to a Macintosh SE/30. The Mac Plus came out
in 1986 and cost $2,599 ($6,163.57 in today's dollars). The SE/30 came out
in 1989 and cost $4,369 ($9,157.92 equivalent today). Buying an accelerator
card for a Plus was more cost-effective than buying a new machine, though
the Plus accelerator did not give the user the SE/30 expansion slot (which
could take high speed network cards or color monitor video cards), or the
new ADB ports for peripherals.

Thanks for that Nathan....At the end of the day, I am still so curious why
this board was still in its packaging inside the unit and not
connected......Perhaps the owner gave up???
