I have an old Mac Quadra 700 which has long since given up the ghost, and I
have reluctantly decided to part company with it.

I am a pensioner living in the UK without my own transport or access to
it, so regrettably anyone wanting it will have to collect it.

I am not going to haggle over the price, I just want to get shot of it.

Here is the Every Mac specs for this model;

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_quadra/specs/mac_quad ra_700.html

The internal hard drive is an DB-25 SCSI drive 270Mb size, but it is not an
Apple Mac SCSI drive with ID = 0.

*Instead it is an IBM model with an ID = 6.*

Therein lay my problem which it now has, of a *Boot-up failure caused by an
ID conflict*.

That I have been unable to rectify hence my decision to part company with
the Mac.

The problem only occurred when I connected an external SCSCI device a ZIP
drive, which has only 2 ID settings 5 and 6.

The Zip drive must have been faulty and permanently set on ID 6, causing
the Mac Hard Drive ID and the Zip Drive ID to clash.

I am not sure of its actual RAM except that its not the max of 68 Mb and I
have not increased it. Once I have been able to ascertain the exact size I
will add that info to the post.

Just added a photo of the insides including the Hard drive.

I am really not bothered I have had it so long it doesn't owe me anything.

Absolutely anything at all.

The only reason I have kept hold of it and tried to get it working is
because I have a file on it that I was working on, a sort of 1st draft of a
document. If you ever get it going I would appreciate at least a copy of
it, it’s a story entitled Atmos.

The only ADB keyboard and mouse I have I was hoping to use on another Mac a
G3, if and when I can get that sorted. Which as of now is not hopeful. And
the only monitor I have is an old Apple 14” that I want to use on that.

Just a thought about travelling from England into Wales under this Covid19
virus, as you’ll

doubtless the rules about moving around here is not as lax as it is in
England.

As far as I know I couldn’t travel to England. My son lives there and he
wants to visit me and can’t at present.

But I’ve had it for years and a bit longer won’t hurt.

Hi Barry.

That would be great if you could hold on until I am allowed to travel to
get it. I will gladly pay you the going rate for a working 700 and as for
the file I should be able to get it plugging the drive into my G4 with a
scsi card I have. as for the keyboard and mouse and monitor i would not
need them i might also be able to help with the G3 desktop for you as i
have a lot of old bits lying around for the g3 desktops mine are all 233 or
333 mhz macs . I also have a few iMacs I am trying to sort out .

i'll get back to you about it later but send a list of what you need for
the g3 as like i said i might be able to help out there.

That's no problem the Quadra is safe here for when ever you can collect it.

As for the G3 I made the mistake in getting rid of my original one as it
only needed another CD drive.
The replacement has a different motherboard, with a wide SCSI connection so
my Hard drive {from my old G3}
can't be used with it. And now the hard drive that came with it is kaput,
so I'm screwed with it.
I am going to put a message up on the Google Vintage Macs Group to get shot
of it.

Curious... do you know if the capacitors on the Quadra 700 mamaboard do
better than the ones in the IIci and such? Capacitors from the pre-china
days tend to have very long lifespans but Apple got an early start on
shipping "lesser componentry" on their boards.

I have a Q700 I picked up at a recycling center and tried a while back
to get working, but didn't have any luck, but also didn't spend much
time on it, could be a bad power supply. At any rate, my recollection
is that on the one I had at least, the capacitors on the motherboard
were all the yellow tantalum capacitors, not the silver can
electrolytic type that fail and leak in the well-known fashion.
Tantalum capacitors can fail too, I have seen it happen on at least
two older PC's (I assume it could happen on Macs too)...and they
either fail silently and likely short out, or they can explode (blow
the top off) in an impressive pop...I have observed one of each, and
when they blow, they get your attention. :-) But to your original
question, if it is like mine, and I'm guessing it would be, they are
the more reliable tantalum capacitors that should not need replacement.

Hi. Yep am planning on moving to tantalum in my IIci.
I understood your reply completely... so thank you!

When I worked at Ample Computerz I bought a Quadra 900 among other
machines... they were cheap for employeez.
Turned out they were cheap all around- the case was always falling apart
and meh... so I had planned on getting a Quadra 700 myself.
I quit working there out of disgust.... gravitated to NeXT work afterward
coz both their hardware+OS software was so much better. Not to mention
NeXT programmers did less work and were paid a lot more than their Mac
counterparts, by and large, due to the scarcity of Objective-C developers.

Anyway, I found a IIci for next to nothing recently, then remembered the
first Mac I did engineering work on was a IIci (at Everex) and kinda fell
in love with it.
I like the case better than the Quadra 700... even tho' they are nearly
identical.
It's like the Star Trek where Spock says to the two identical chick robots,
"I love you... but I hate you!"
Or something like that. Hmm. I don't hate the 700 tho'. :-) I do prefer
the IIfx and the IIci models right now.

I have a tentative order in at Mouser for tantalum caps but want to line up
a few more projects coz of the shipping costs!
Hope I can get that machine working by January.

Incidentally, does anyone have a installed image of A/UX 3.0? A/UX 2.0? I
was stupid enough to sell my copy of both, which I got when I was at Ample.
That's what I really want to run again on my Mac II series models. A/UX
3.x runs zippity quick on the Quadras but just think the earlier models are
cuter.

I had (well, sorta still have) a IIci and a IIcx I picked up some years back
at a thrift store cheap. Unfortunately that was before I learned of the
dangers of leaking batteries...you can probably guess where this is
leading...not much left of them. More recently I got a IIcx motherboard
from someone and re-capped it, but still couldn't get it to work...gave up
on it for the time being. Might have to take another stab at it some
day...but not sure what else to try. As I recall, the only real difference
in the II's and 700 is that the II's are set up to be in desktop orientation
and the 700 as a tower? All personal preference... :-)

I have re-capped a couple of old Macs, mainly LC and LCII's so far. I found
that the MLCC (multilayer ceramic) capacitors work very well. Nice and
small (but not too small) with plenty of pad on the board to make them very
easy to solder on. Also no polarity to worry about. Sounds like they may
be more reliable than even the tantalum capacitors. I know what you mean,
shipping is the worst part! The last ones I got I picked some up from
ebay...US sellers selling some off of a reel or whatever...prices and
shipping both better than from Mouser/Digikey/etc.

Cool.

It's been a long time but as I remember the 700 mainboard was developed in
a IIci. They changed the case a little to make it seem less like a IIci
and more like a new model, which it was, in terms of the motherboard,
anyway. I haven't tried it but the main boards are probably
interchangeable.... the supply was probably upgraded too.

There used to be a guy inside Apple who would upgrade a IIci and various
other machines... if you knew enough to find him! They had plenty of extra
boards lying around at times so IIcis became quadras as I recall and
earlier on Macintosh II models became IIfx machines.

I’m neither William nor Barry but you can call me interested in a Quadra 700. I have one, but the motherboard got melted by a popped battery.

Some trivia
The q700 may look like a iici but the rear port layout is incompatible
The Quadra 800 motherboard can be used as a drop in replacement, no modifications necessary
The PSU from a iici, q650, or powermac 7100 is compatible with the 700. The Mac iisi psu has the same connector but won’t fit in the case

Hi Barry, I have a friend in the UK who would like to provide your Quadra
700 with a loving new home. If you email me at squaredub@fastmail.com I
will forward your contact info to him. (This group seems to be invisible
now and he can't join it.)

Thanks
