Alex Moore (whoever that is) misses something important. He says there
is nothing to gain except peace but he omits the "victim cred" people
get for making a claim against someone and the "solidarity cred" they
get for announcing their support of other "victims". The beauty of
victim cred is that you get it whether something actually happened or
you made the whole thing up; you are taken at your word and even if your
word is proven false, that never comes out with nearly the prominence
that your initial accusation did so it's like it never happened.
Solitary cred is obviously a variety of virtue-signalling, which is very
easy to do yet doesn't actually prove genuine virtue: you may be just as
slimy as the person you're accusing, who may well be innocent.

Personally, I won't consider anyone who automatically believes
"survivors" to be virtuous. If they want me to think they're virtuous,
they need to demand that a proper investigation takes place with the
accused person being able to tell their side of the story before
judgement is rendered.

And "embracing people (at what sounds like a meet and greet) without
consent"? Jeezus, The Shat spends the whole day telling fans not to hug HIM.

People believed that in the 50s. And the 60s. And the 70s.
But, today, only /some/ people believe that.
The Rest of Us have a different opinion.

So it wasn't just me who didn't see anything worse than what John Barrelman
does at conventions in that YouTube clip?

I find it ironic that a pro-Trumpie actually started this post. (And there's a reason I resurrected the thread...)

First, the latter: Vic Mignogna, in what is being slated as the first round of lawsuits he is going to file. on Thursday (4/18) sued his three main accusers and Funimation for at least seven figures.

I can't see how Funimation survives this unless Sony decides to backstop everything and absorb a massive loss, eventually far exceeding .

Speaking as someone who knows all too well: Vic Mignogna cannot keep his hands off women and girls. If you read even a remote fraction of the actual material which has come out on the subject (one article on Anime News Network and a very startling io9 article come to immediate mind), you've got a probable attempted rape by Mignogna on another voice talent at a con (io9), you've got a pattern of behavior SO PERVASIVE that many cons literally had no less than "Code Vic" (io9 and pictures in the ANN article)...

I can't see how the con scene survives this either. Every major convention now has massive liability exposure, because of the length of time this has gone on and the complete ignorance of the anime community to do anything about it because of Vic's position as the #1 guest and voice actor in the community. And most of these cons don't even remotely have the $150M value Funimation has -- and I've said for 12-15 years that, should the authorities find out what REALLY GOES ON at these events, they will be shot out of the water.

The anime industry in the United States, now, only exists on a level of fraud, deceit, and cover-up. The entire industry is a fraud, on a financial level first -- and, now, it appears, far more than that!

So the fact that Vic Mignogna would be accused of being Anime's Dark Secret in the United States does not surprise me at all. I liked the guy -- but, as someone far too similar to him in real life in my younger years, I do understand the level to which this has probably gone, and been defended by an industry and conventions far too reliant on drawing the curtain when the time comes.

As for my initial crack at the author: What you have here, on the most fundamental of levels, is the anime industry/convention equivalent of the "grab em in the pussy" tape. If there's one man who had the power to go and do whatever he wanted to whomever he wanted at these events (staff, talent, or attendee), it's Vic Mignogna.

You have a few people on the internet saying how he hugged them and
kissed their cheeks without asking. Which unless they were the first
person in line they had to see him doing to 80% of the female fans in
front of them so the way most of them seem to make it out as a
surprising, traumatic event does not make me think highly of their
truthfulness.

And you have a coworker saying he invited her back to his room to see
his "etchings" kissed her and then stopped when she was not into
it,years ago. No rape or sexual assault involved and that is just if you
take every story as the complete truth regardless of how implausible and
bandwagony most of them are. Which is why he is suing people.

If he has done stuff that he deserves to lose his livelihood over then
it should come out and the lawsuit should help that. If they is no
evidence of that then I hope this lawsuit will show that as well. So
hopefully this will work out well regardless.

I disagree for several reasons, and I speak as someone who basically became, in my first two colleges, a walking Title IX violation (to the point of Failure to Protect lawsuits being filed (or, at the very least, considered) against at least my first college, for just this kind of stuff.

First off, in my then-home state (though NOT in Texas), it is not only sexual assault, but depraved sexual gratification is assumed by it. In fact, simply putting one's arm around another person (fully clothed) is sufficient..

(In fact, had what was largely believed of me with respect to the woman I was eventually arrested for in 1998, then I factually sexually assaulted (4th degree -- any unwelcome touch is a sexual assault in that state) HER in November of 1996.)

The problem with your line of thinking here is the concept of sexual harassment and assault, and the very low bar of proof.

That paragraph is a huge "victim shaming", because it basically says "It's OK for everyone else, then it has to be OK for you -- else why are you even here?" -- which could go far beyond that to anime conventions in general and the anime fandom in general! (One of the reasons I think the entire fandom may not survive this.)

I forget if the incident happened in Texas or not. In Texas, that is almost-certainly assault, but not sexual.

However, it would be sexual assault in other states (especially if this action had been at a convention -- we don't know what other state this might've been in).

However further, there are other accounts, including at least one in the io9 article (for which the author WILL be in the next round of lawsuits -- that basically has been confirmed by Mignogna's lawyers on Twitter!), indicating he did sexually pin at least one female voice talent to a hotel bed.

"As they watched the video, she says, Mignogna grabbed her by the arms and kissed her aggressively, including putting his tongue inside her mouth. She tried to pull away, only to have him pull her back in. She told io9 she felt scared and frozen, “like a board.” Then, things escalated. Charlotte said Mignogna backed her up to the bed and she fell down, then he got on top of her. Soon after, a friend came to check on them, and she immediately got off of the bed."

(From https://io9.gizmodo.com/one-of-anime-s-biggest-voices-accuse d-of-sexual-harassm-1832390505)

There is no word on which state this took place in or when. However, that is all but clear attempted rape by Mignogna. In fact, putting his tongue in her mouth would be sexual assault in most states (but not in a state which requires one or the other sexual organs to be in contact -- Texas being one).

I don't think it can end well, for three reasons -- all of which basically stem that this was the #1 guest and the #1 voice actor in the industry.

1) The entire money value of Funimation as a company is not going to go far in litigation. And I can't see Sony absorbing much further than that before they cut ship.

2) A deep (and I do believe irreparable) rift has developed, not only with respect to the VA's, but the fans as well. Eventually, the losing side will be completely forced from the industry and fandom.

If Vic loses, he's out and you'd have to think most of his fans may not be as welcome at conventions and clubs. One convention has already had to take the extreme step of threatening arrest to anyone who basically looked cross-eyed at one of the defendants a couple of months ago.

He wins, and he probably, part and parcel, owns Funimation and a good part of the American anime industry, by the time everything shakes out. The #KickVic crew would be identified and banned.

3) Mark these words and mark them well. Every major convention is going to be sued, eventually, if Vic loses. They're not only going to be sued by victims of Vic directly (not only for his actions, but a Failure to Protect on the mere basis of the reputation Vic was building up.

I believe this does end the conventions, as you know them -- just going to take the time for this all to winnow out (could happen this summer, 2020 more likely).

I do believe this ends the dub industry -- not only has it only been upheld through fraud and cover-up, but the fact is you are about (one way or the other) to lose a significant number of talents (there is now report that Todd Haberkorn has had a BR exclusive dropped, and HE'S facing sexual harassment charges too!). Between that and I believe an almost-certain (again, regardless of winner) Funimation bankruptcy upcoming, I think the US dub scene is done.

Yes, Mike, you also couldn't see how anime could survive in 2000. It's
been twenty years since you've been wrong, and you've been invariably
wrong since.

It will all survive, because Vic's going to fail in his suits; "Truth
is an absolute defense against libel/slander".

Well enjoy civilization while it lasts. As long as
civilization lasts live action on stage, on TV, in movies
and video, novels, anime and manga will be strong as well
as all the other forms of enjoyable wastes of time.
Mikey's favorite president is ignoring the problems
to profit the petroleum companies. No move to non-carbon
power, no move to secure the nuclear power plants and no
understanding of the pointlessness of coal, no repairs to
the national infrastructure, no transparency in government.
As CNN advertised No Exhoneration. I hope the USA can pull
it together and survive the Climate Change over the next
few hundred years but I doubt that it will.
Too many ostrich-genes in the politicians on both sides.

The Democrats stayed to resist Trump, not to enjoy
his unenlightened mal-administration. Mignogna must be a
Trumpie as well since he acts just like the Misogynist-in
-Chief.

When people like Mikey are right the rest of the world
will be unhappy but scarcely notice the doomsayer,

bliss

One paragraph at a time:

I kinda hid the answer. It's ALL fraud and deceit.

So that's the first one.

The second one makes a far more complicated situation, and is the basis on my prediction. I agree with you that I think Vic is guilty (and I use my own experiences as a similar-level hugger as the basis on which I believe Monica, et. al.).

But, after that, I ask you this question: Does this not render every convention in the country of any reasonable size (have there been any which have not, one year or another, taken Vic over the last 20?) liable for "How could you even THINK of having this guest and endanger the other guests and attendees?"

Or Funimation: "With this kind of reputation, how is he employed?"

Etc. These people do not have that much money to lose to even fighting a lawsuit, much less (and I believe they would) losing one!

Even here, this story. I read it in animenewsnetwork.com and everything I can say is that dude is vicious and everyone whi protect him does it in sake of very lifestyle of misogyny and patriarchy. Once Vic may left right discource and every supporter will suddenly find dude guilty.
