“Darling in the FranXX” is a new Trigger mecha vs monsters anime. The first episode reminded me of a strange cross between “EVA”, “Betterman” and “Candidate for Goddess”, but with a female lead who has horns and calls her partner “Darling”.

In some far future dystopia orphans are tested to become sacrificial pilots of mechas that are used to fight giant quantum-dino-mecha monsters. The mechas used for fighting depend upon the interaction and compatibility of the female and male co-operators. The better the two are matched, the more the mecha can turn into its primary form, which is a giant female mecha with powers to destroy the giant whatever-beasts.

A wimpy, whiney kid has just failed out of the training program when he runs into a mysterious girl who has the reputation of killing off her partners during mecha battles. The mystery girl has horns and is very aggressive in comparison with the kid who is terribly repressed. Never-the-less, or maybe because “opposites attract”, Horn Girl and Wimpy Kid are attracted to each other and end up accidentally and successfully fighting a monster together.

The first episode was very much Trigger with great visuals, clumsy writing, and random fan service. All the time I was watching it I kept on wondering what it would be like if instead it were done by the team that did “Zegapain”. Alas, that didn't happen, therefore I have to be content to sit back and see what Trigger can do with this rather overused premise.

So I'll leave my brain at the door for a while and watch at least another episode of this series. At the moment I'm giving the first episode a “B” for energy and scenery.
