I have an iphone 6s. I was able to download photos from my phone using my
DA G4 and a cable until I upgraded to
iOS 10.3, I think. Now I am using a Dual G5 with iphoto 9. It doesn't
matter, it doesn't work. My iphone is a brink
to either of these computers.

What do I need to connect my iphone to a computer without using email to
transfer photos?

It has not to do with the Mac model, but with OSX version.

For iOS 10.3, I think you need OSX 10.9 Mavericks at least.
See here:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8871

N.B: OSX 10.9 is free from Apple, but you cannot download it from the
AppleStore since several years ago.

Try Image Capture. It won’t sync or let you add or remove programs but it works for getting photos off of iPhones and iPads (at least on modern systems)

I'm afraid Image Capture is subject to the same limitation: iOS 10.3 "broke"
communication with OSX previous to OSX 10.9.

I know because my girlfriend has an iPhone 6 and we used Image Capture to
download pictures to her iMac under OSX 10.6.
When she updated her iPhone to iOS 10.3 (I think), no method was working
under OSX 10.6 anymore. That's why I found I need to operate under OSX 10.9.

Sorry it snot an easy idea, but it's all that comes to mind as nothing i
could test or do would be valid as i only still have my aging
iphone4(non-S), but i cant be certain, You might be able to do something w/
Linux. the most upto date distro i think available for PowerPC's is Ubuntu
MATE 16.04.1 (which looses Extended Support in 2019 :/ ), i couldn't get it
to run on my G5 (Dual 2.0ghz G5's) *shrugs* but i believe its due to it
had one of the troublesome Videocards. (and my G4 doesnt have a DVD Drive
so i cant test anyway) at worst long as your carefull, your only going to
loose time. partition haphazardly or accidentally the layout or the OSX
Partition, then RIP all your data :/ i hope something thats easier that'll
work for you comes along.

if yours was an intel mac i would of suggested just setting up bootcamp
and installing Windows 7

will work retro as per your needs, but: take a look at iMazing and
PhotoSync. You may have to dig deep into their archives or simply inquire
if they have a compatible version for your circumstance. Apparently theres
a PC app that enable airplay between PC and Mac so seems someone must have
a retro fix for this problem.

Came here to say exactly this: Image Capture has always worked
flawlessly for me across different OS Xes and iOSes. As Bruce said,
it's not the 'smartest' of syncing, but it will get the photos off there
and onto your GX machine.
