Well, here is an answer from years later: I had mine repaired by Apple
because of the glitch in the mating of the two case halves, which made the
screen connection unstable (somehow), but that was long ago and the
(extended because of user outrage) repair solution is no longer available
from Apple. An independent reliable Apple repair person just might be able
to help. Wish I had better and more timely news for you.

I've long since gotten rid of the machine, as I've moved onto many more
useful Macs.

I'm much more into Macs than ever before, and am actively posting in many
of the Apple enthusiast Facebook groups, including LEM's fb group
