Replaced memory in my G5, now it beeps twice and refuses to start. Fans go
to max. RPM. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Hi!

The two beeps mean "Incompatible RAM type installed". Either one DIMM
died or you just recently pulled the DIMMs and reseated them in the
wrong order. http://www.welovemacs.com/whdoallthbme.html

You should try to use only one pair (use the correct slot order). If
this does not work, maybe you included the faulty ones so use a
different pair of DIMMs and try again. See
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3029247?tstart=0 and
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201689 for some information about the
slot order.

Good luck!

This is what happens when the power supply is bad. Get a multimeter and check the voltages. Search “PowerMac G5 pinout diagram” for the correct voltages. If you need a power supply, some people have modified standard PC ATX power supplies to work in G5’s. If you’re doing this much work, replace the thermal paste on the CPUs, it’s gotta be completely dried & dead in over a decade.

Hi!

I disagree because the two beeps indicate a RAM problem.

The fans will always go up if no thermal management is initiated. This
also happens if you stay in the boot selection (holding Alt or Option on
start-up) for a very long time, and also if the PRAM battery is bad and
the start-up sequence doesn't pass the Power-On-Self-Test (POST). (To
name just two cases with high rpm fans.)

Though it *could* also indicate a PSU problem, it seems more likely to
be the replaced memory in this specific case.

Cheers,

i Hate to Hijack where are the CPUS located on a Dual G5 Model? (it sparked
me to re-paste my G5 w/ Artic Silver)
as for the OP, it could be a Dying PSU or bad Ram, try to locate an older
PC that used DDR2 Ram, and Run Memtest86+

if everything worked before you made a change, then there is usually
something wrong with that change. First, unplug the power cable and let
the computer "discharge" for at least 30 seconds. Then pull the memory
that you just installed. Check the memory sticks to make sure that they
are the correct type and speed for your computer. Then reinstall the
memory sticks carefully, making sure that the sticks are not reversed
(end-to-end) and that they are fully seated with the locks in place at
each end. If the stick rocked back and forth like a teeter-totter while
you installed it, then remove, recheck that it is not in backwards and
retry. This is most likely what what caused the beeps.

If you did not succeed in booting, check to make sure you have a
keyboard, mouse and monitor/display properly plugged in. Be calm.
Problems are usually easy to diagnose.

Finally, if the memory is significantly different from the original, you
may need to reset the parameter RAM. You can look up how to do that for
your particular model at everymac.com or lowendmac.com.

Just FIY, computer boards are usually very sturdy with at least 6 plies
of epoxy and fiber filler for memory sticks and even more for main
boards and logic boards. They are designed to take the stress of many
slot insertions and card or stick removals.
