I don't know about that review link, but electric cars still use oil to
lubricate the various moving parts (wheel bearings, etc.) as well as in
the production of much of the world's electricity.

Anyone who believes electric cars are a panacea to the "oil crisis" or
the "green revolution" is simply a blinkered moron.

Most of it's sealed, but you've got battery pack coolant, brake fluid,
gearbox oil, windshield wiper fluid, whatever it uses for 'freon' ...
you have to have $600 a year in service from Tesla where presumably
they'll do all that; of course, there's not a Tesla dealer within the
car's driving range of me, so that would be a problem.

Yeah, they've bought into 'tailpipe emissions' and don't realize that as
much or more pollution is being generated, just upstream.

I was referring to the crankcase oil, which with an electric motor there
would not be a need for oil to lubricate pistons, valves, and camshaft, etc,
in the traditional sense.

Also "downstream" in trying to get rid of all those extra toxic
batteries. Plus, since the pile of batteries inside them will
expensively need to be replaced fairly often, most people will simply
upgrade to a newer car (one of the real reasons behind the push), which
means then also means extra material to be disposed of.

Here in New Zealand, they've just started new electric trains in
Auckland City (some parts, since not all the lines are electrified yet)
and are boasting about how great they are ... except they have to keep
the old diesel trains around beacuse when the electricty goes down the
only way to then move the stupid new trains is by towing them with a
real train, plus only some parts of the system have been electrified.

There is still oil and it will still need replacing - electric motors
do have moving parts and those need lubrication to keep them working
properly.

That "oil change" may not happen as regularly, but there are other
service requirements for electric vehicles that are needed instead, not
to mention replacing the expensive battery packs *when* they
deteriorate and can no longer hold a proper charge.

Electric vehicles are not a "step forward", but at best a "step
sideways" (if not a "step backwards" since electric vehicles were in
use before petrol driven ones and given up as being less efficient).

It would be funny if it wasn't tax-payer money being wasted on buying
something like 38 new trains to run on a railway system that only has
two lines and a dead-end city centre station with only four platforms.
Not to mention that they couldn't run the system they had properly.
:-\

The morons in charge now want to waste piles more money digging an
underground "City Loop" line (including buying and compensating
affected building owners) that comes out of the dead-end station and
goes up under the main city centre street to join in to the existing
line back at the top ... this is after having had a free bus service
running up and down the main street that was under-used.

Yep. Here they started a few years ago putting in bus-only lanes on
many main roads and bus-only motorways alongside the normal motorway.

They were then boasting about how bus patronage had gone up ... well,
duh! Of course it went up ... because some people who used to take
their car into the city centre and pay large amounts for parking all
day realised they could now park for free at the local bus station
instead and pay less by taking the bus in. Which means the local bus
station carparks are already full by about 8:00am. Added to the fact
that the number of people / cars is rising anyway, it in reality made
no difference at all to the congestion. :-\

What also escaped their tiny brains was the fact that most of the local
buses now go to the local station for passengers to transfer to a
city-going bus, which means trips actually take longer, even though the
trip from the bus station to the city itself is quicker.

The pea-brains believe that having better public transport will reduce
car congestion ... except that the available public transport *ALL*
goes to the city centre, and most people don't want to go there - they
won't to go past there to get to another suburb, which means using a
bus require a couple of transfers and would take about five times as
long (assuming you didn't miss a connection and they the unlikely event
that they all run on time).

Yeah. And they try desperately to force you to take the bus to jury
duty, and it's just a nightmare - I'd have to take a cab to the bus
station! They really somehow think everybody just lives within easy
walking distance of a bus stop.

Ahh, Jury Duty. I did that once and it was a complete waste of a week.
The next time I got my boss to write a letter saying I was
indispensable and couldn't go, the next two times I was self-employed
so couldn't go again.

The problem is compounded in Auckland due to two factors.
Geographically the city is stuck on a narrow strip of land between two
coastlines and two indented harbours. Then there's the citizens who
don't want multi-storey blocks, so the city has and continues to spread
outwards, rather than up. With a population of just over 1 million and
a land area about the same as Greater London, that means the population
density simply can't support a good public transport system.

They don't accept those excuses any more here. The only job that counts
as 'indispensable' is - I swear - court clerk.

Christchurch NZ city centre was almost wiped out in an earthquake a few
years ago. Does Auckland suffer from earthquakes much??

Nope, not really anything in Auckland. (Christchurch is still having
small quakes every so often, and Wellington further north as had a few
recently.)

There have been minor shakes in the past (mostly peripheral from
earthquakes further south where the fault line actually crosses the
land), but nothing really noticeable.

Auckland does have lots of volcanic cones, but they're all dead /
dormant, although they keep wittering on about how an eruption is "due"
in the next thousand years or so.

Being on a narrow strip of land between two oceans near the top of the
north, it could be get a tsunami wave, but the recent one of those was
lucky if it was an inch by the time it got way down here across
thousands of miles of ocean.

Recent years has seen a few small tornadoes pass through, a couple of
which have been pretty bad (two or three people killed), but nothing
compared to those massive twisters in some parts of America.

Being self-employed means you are the only one who can do the work, so
you are literally indispensible. :-) If they force you to do Jury
Service, then it could well destroy your business.

Personally I think the jury system is idiotically stupid and plain
wrong. Judges are trained and paid excessive amounts to be able to pass
judgement (hence their job title), yet they farm it off to untrained
members of the public who scum lawyers pick-and-choose to be on the
jury. :-\

Yes. I've had that discussion with them on many occasions. Basically
they blow a raspberry at you.

Yep. Well, except for the "judges are trained" part.

In America you could always just sue them for destroying your business
