I bit the bullet and bought an expensive 240GB Mercury Legacy Pro SSD for
my PowerBook G4 15" (model 5,6 1.67GHz). OSX 10.5.8. 1GB RAM.

The install isn't difficult, just time consuming. I upgraded my
PowerBook's HD before, installed a better superdrive and replaced the PRAM
battery, so I'm comfortable with the procedure.

I mistakenly thought the Mercury Legacy SSD would be a walk in the park but
I can't get my PowerBook to see it. The SSD is visible when connected to a
Mac Pro via an external USB adapter. It seems to be fine with the Mac Pro,
just not the legacy PowerBook.

On the PowerBook, the SSD does not appear in Disk Utility or System
Profiler. I booted from my OSX install DVD. I also tried booting in
TARGET DISK mode. The DVD could be seen by the other Mac but no SSD in TD
Mode.

I did a PMU and PRAM resets. No luck.

The connectors seem ok and firmly seated. I reconnected the 5400RPM drive
and that worked ok. I still had the original smaller drive lying around
and that worked too. Just no joy with the Mercury Legacy Pro SSD.

Does anyone here have success with PowerBooks and SSDs? Any suggestions
and help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jaeson

This question should really be sent to the G-Books list, not here.

or even more appropriately to the G4-Books Group, except that such LEM Groups are practically dead anyway.

Since you bought the SSD from OWC, why don't you ask their Technical Support, instead of members of this group, who own ancient PowerBooks?

The reason I referred the OP to the G-Books group is that I am still a
nanny there, and it's at least closer to G4 than this group. I may be
mistaken in this, but I think I recall that G4Books may be one of those
groups that now has no nanny, thus no post to it by a new would-be
member can be approved.

This is probably NOT the solution, but try partitioning and formatting the ssd on a system that does recognize it to an APM partition. Disk Utility in 10.5.8 SHOULD recognize even an unpartitioned drive, but it's worth a shot.

One thing is certain. The fact the in Target Disk Mode the drive is visible
indicates proper installation. Are you confident that this drive is for
your computer? I guess it must be but one other question, have you
contacted the seller to be sure?

I myself ordered an 80GB 3G Legacy pro SSD for the same exact model
PowerBook G4, and never had a problem, you may have a possibly defective
unit, or it isn't configured to work with your PowerBook. Try formatting it
with a partition map in Disk utility on another Mac.

Weirdly I haven't yet received the original post, but Mark is right on. 90% of the time the reason you cannot install an OS on a brand new drive is that it's not partitioned properly.

Make sure it's formatted as an APM volume, as this is a G4. If it's formatted as an FAT or GUID it will show up in Target Disk Mode just fine, but you won't be allowed to install the OS on it.

Run Disk utility on it in TDM to fix this.

(also if a new drive simply doesn't appear when installed, many times it's completely unformatted, the solution is the same: repartition and format in Disk Utility)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I gave up the OWC Mercury SDD for my PB G4.  I returned it and got another with the same issues.  Mine was the 480GB.  They were unusually hot when connected.  A bad batch?  I wasn't happy with OWC support either.  It was a frustrating experience.

I had problems with their SSDs for my PowerMac Dual G5 too.  I did finally get that resolved and it's been working great.

I went another route with a different SDD & adapter for my PB G4 and it worked perfectly out of the box.  No fuss.

Personally I've never had a problem with OWC products, however, when it
came to my dual G5, I chose an Intel SSD, then gave it away and bought
myself a corsair SSD. Never looked back.
