It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Darren McGavin at
approximately 7:10 A.M. Pacific time today, Saturday 25, 2006. Darren was
just three months short of his 84th birthday. While we suspect none of us
can imagine a world without the beloved, feisty little red-head, it is time
to reflect, give thanks for his life and hold in reverence his memory.
Darren is gone, but in many respects he will always be with us: as Carl
Kolchak, fighting authority and battling monsters; the grumpy Old Man
sending curses over Lake Michigan; as David Ross, the outsider, Grey Holden,
captain of the Enterprise, the irascible detective Mike Hammer or any number
of memorable guest star appearances, most notably as Joe Bascome on GUNSMOKE
and as the washed-up old actor from "Distant Signals."
Please take a moment in your sadness to reflect upon all the ways Darren
touched your lives, say a prayer and raise a glass to toast a career which
spanned over fifty years and affected us all in ways too numerous to count.

As a huge fan of "The Night Stalker," this is terribly sad news.
Wow...Darren McGavin and Don Knotts in less than 24 hours. And I'm
still bummed out about B5's Andrea Katsulas from last week and
"Coupling" actress Lou Gish from Monday. February is taking its toll...

I'm sure the executives at ABC are high 5ing themselves today becuase
they cancelled the Night Stalker, there's no way they want to repeat
the headaches they went through after John Ritter's death.

Why? The show only bore the name but the character was very different
and Darren McGavin was never on the show. They only superimposed his
image once in the pilot episode. So I can't see how Mr. McGavin's
death would have affected the show had it survived.

I thought Darren McGavin was terrific. I also remember him from the
premiere episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man," in which he played
Steve Austin's boss. (He was later replaced by Richard Anderson, who
wasn't as good an actor.)

At least I can count on seeing him on TBS every Christmas.
Good actor, he will be missed.

Yes. McGavin's "Oliver Spencer" was a much better character for a much
better presentation. Anderson was probably better suited for the goofy fun
show Cyborg devolved into though.

IIRC, the first few episodes of "Six Million Dollar Man" tried to be
serious, portraying Steve Austin as an international secret agent. It
flopped in the ratings. So they jazzed up the format and returned
Austin to his astronaut roots. Then the show took off in the ratings.

He was one of my favorites. I was surprised, although I guess I
shouldn't have been, that Don Knotts' death was reported on page 1,
while McGavin's was buried inside. To me, McGavin was the much bigger
star.

I wouldn't call that 'serious' by any means. Remember the Dusty Springfield
theme?
He's a man, he's a man
The six million dollar man
Catch him if you can, beat him if you can,
love him if you can
Now he's a man

Its too bad. He was a very effective character actor, even in mediocre
products.
But its nice they brought out the odious "Night Stalker" tv remake
because it really
helped emphasize how much BETTER McGavin's show was.

Knotts also went first; the stories about him were probably set to go when
the news about McGavin came in.

I think there was a big time difference in the reports..... also Knotts
was arguably the second best supporting comedian in history, after Art
Carney.

Not to disparage McGavin's talent (I liked him on Chicago Hope and The
X-Files), but all comparisons of talent aside, Knotts was objectively
a far bigger star than McGavin.

Yes, very sad news! For those of us of a certain age, it
confirms the end of a grand era in TV--for many, many years,
McGavin was a ubiquitous presence on TV, appearing in a wide
variety of dramas and comedies...Kolchak was only one of his
many great and memorable characters; I will choose to always
remember him in his immortal classic Christmas movie, A
Christmas Story,
which hopefully will continue to play every year for
forever! My condolances go out to his family and
friends--RIP Darren! ...tonyC

Yes, I remember him when he was King of the TV Movies. Almost every
succssful pilot had him in it. What a fine actor.

Knotts had the more recognizable name, but I think McGavin's body of
work far outshines Knotts. The Natural, Kolchak, Christmas Story...
quality material. Knotts basically had Andy Griffith, Scooby Doo, and
Three's Company. There's no comparison.
Knotts only got lucky in that he got a supporting role in
Pleasantville, probably the best quality work in his life, but he's
not particularly memorable in it. When I think of Pleasantville,
William Macy, Reese Witherspoon, and J.T. Walsh are the names that
immediately come to mind.

To say that someone who appeared in 72 movies and TV series and got 5 Emmies
"only got lucky" when he played a bit part 47 years into his film career
seems a bit silly.
I wouldn't consider him to be a "star" although he did in 2000 get one on
the Walk of Fame. Supporting actors aren't generally thought of that way.

Knotts and McGavin had one movie together, as far as I remember, a
Disney movie called Hot Lead and Cold Feet. Typical Disney formulaic
fluff but I rather liked it. The two men had a hilarious scene
together where Knotts as the Sheriff does a routine right out of Andy
Griffith ("he knows that I know, but he doesn't know that I know that
he knows that I know...but I know..." and McGavin just looks at him and
walks away.)
