I've seen various references to having a 1541 with a parallel interface
.... how does this work ? Where does it plug in ? And what else needs
to be done on the C64/128 and 1541 to make it work ? (ROM changes ?)

Thanks!

Mark

Put simply, the VIA#1 chip inside the 1541 gets some of its pins rerouted
into a parallel port you either drill and bolt onto the backplate, or you
have a parallel cable dangling out. It plugs into the userport of the C=
machine. The C= itself doesn't get modified, although you will need
dedicated software for it since it uses custom drive routines.

If it's a 1541 drive, you won't need adjustments. If it's a 1541C, it needs
both the connection stripped and the ROM swapped with that of a 1541 or
1541-II. If it's a 1541-II, it needs the same connection stripped (bit 0 of
Port A).

Quoted non-verbatim. More info at http://sta.c64.org/xp1541.html

Once done it works with various software positions - no ROM changes
required but possible (e.g. SpeedDOS+) to extend the application range.

It's also used by nibble copiers such as Maverick. Kind of neet too.

Also, if you want to archive your original C64 disks to the PC, you can
use the parallel cable with a PC and the tool named "mnib" to make .G64
backups of your disks which include the original copy protection too*.

See www.rittwage.com for more details on mnib and C64 copy protections.
