As for the IRS buying a whole bunch of Zilogs for OA:

I work at the IRS national office, and we have a total of 4 Zilog model
31 boxes, running the C-shell. They are nice boxes, execept when trying
to use them for real-time processing, especially word processing. If you
have more than two people useing XED(tm) at the same time, the 'space-
heater' drasticly slows down, and this does not seem to be because of
disk access. We have tried configurating our boxed different ways to re-
duce the disk access time, but it has not helped much. Plus, you really
have to have a hard-core C and UNIX hacker to keep the things running. It
has been quite a struggle all along, but we do use the Zilog's in many
different OA and data processing applications. There are 4 in my office,
but thrughout the building, there are at least a dozen or so. We are working
on networking them together, and have had some success with uucp and mmdf,
however, the speed of the system presents problems there as well.
