Well, you have to remember that what a system outputs and what it is actually
capable of can be two very different things. All XBox games at the very least
run at 480p (640x480), so that every game can be said to be HDTV compatible
(it's odd though, because the boot-up graphics run at 480i!!!) I can name
only two that have gone above that; the aforementioned Dragon's Lair 3D which
is 1080i (1920x540@60Hz), actually, not 1080p (1920x1080@30-45hz); and Tony
Hawk Pro Skater 3, which runs at 720p (1280x720@30-45Hz.) One of the football
games might do 720p or 1080i, but I'm not sure.
That's not to say that the XBox can't do better than that--it's only
hinderance being the amount of RAM programmers wish to use for resolution
over amount of polygons and effects for each game. Not to mention the size of
the game itself at such high res would chew up the space on a DVD-ROM rather
quickly.
I'm not so sure about the PS2 though. It probably has enough RAM and
processing power to output resolutions higher than 640x480 (and I'm not even
sure there are that many games that support that resolution.) I guess the
proof is in the pudding. I plan to get a PS2 and hook it to my Mitsubishi
Megaview 37". If I can't get any proper images thru my component to VGA
adapter with it (this monitor won't reproduce interlaced images--even though
it has a max resolution of 1280x1024@45Hz) I'll know what games aren't
running at at least 640x480p.
And that's why we have line-doublers; which is what I use to hook my Duo upto
said monitor! It doesn't look half bad--if a bit pixelly!!
Thanx for enduring my rantings
