Subject: NEW PC Engine Catalog Project


Hi Turbo Listers,

Time to unveil something that Bt and I have been working on for quite a 
while - a new version of the PC Engine Catalog Project.

The main work has been done - refining information about all the games for 
the PC Engine and collecting new information (where possible).  New cover 
scans, and game play screen shots now exist (including "bad system card", 
where possible).  Even better, the data is now stored in a database, and 
there is a new search function.  There is also a PC-FX section - and while 
the information is not yet complete, it is already better than it had been 
in previous versions.

The scripts will be improved from time to time, adding new features and 
improving others (for example, I will be adding new search criteria soon).

And let's discuss it here.

If you find inaccurate (or incomplete) information, I'd be happy to fix it 
if you have more accurate information.  Also, we can discuss enhancements here.

But before we start, here is a list of things that we already plan to improve:
1) PCE database contains all regular-release games, but not all 'special 
version' games yet
2) PC-FX data is complete for some data fields, but incomplete for some 
other data fields, and game play video capture is currently a work-in-progress
3) We will be adding a "coming soon" list of improvements
4) We will be adding new fields in the search functionality
5) We will be adding "alphabet" hyperlinks in the game list, to 'jump to' a 
letter when the list is alphabetically sorted (A/KA/SA/etc. for Japanese 
sequence).
6) We plan to add user forums for: a) discussion, b) review, c) rating 
system... but this is a set of features which could take a while to implement.

Information that we would like to get:
1) USA-release dates and introductory prices
2) Corrections to inaccurate data, or improper Japanese names or sort 
sequence (yes, the site will already work in SJIS and Japanese sort 
sequence, for game titles)

I hope this sparks some good discussion.

I love the catalog but is it still incomplete?  I have Record of Lodoss War
I and II and did not see those up on the catalog.  I think ROLW 1 is a CD
and ROLW 2 is a SCD.  Was there a reason these are not on the list or did I
not look under the right title?

Search for lodoss (it's a substring search).
You'll find that they are both listed under Lodoss Tousenki

The 'also known as' field is currently not searched AFAIK, but I will fix 
that soon.

However, at the moment, the MOOK versions of Lodoss Tousenki 1 and 2 are 
not listed separately.

A few suggestions. a button that allows you to display only US or only Jap
Games.

The back covers of cd games need to be complete with both spines ( for
reproduction purposes , i know id like a back for my GoT and right now your
the only site ive found one on).

A list of what US games came with or without plastic trays insted of Hu
cards.

Could you incorporate some kind of rarity into the list?

Right now, you can click on the heading "Country", and the games will be 
sorted in sequence:
Japan followed by USA - but I will be augmenting the search/filter 
capabilities soon, to separate these if you desire.

I see... the covers are there for identification and general information 
purposes, rather than duplication purposes.

There are some obvious copyright issues involved with making 
high-resolution, printer-ready scans of that nature...  and we'd prefer not 
to become embroiled in any "problem" type areas.

Besides, you probably don't know how much work it is to re-scan 900 
games.   :-)

That information is there - "case type".
This includes those "thick CD", "thin CD", and "double CD" cases that came 
with certain games.
But it currently appears only when you show the game.

The US Hucards are currently divided into "one-piece HuCard CD Case" and 
"No Case".
PC Engine releases also have "HuCard tray insert for CD Case".

Too subjective for one of us to rate at the moment.
But areas for discussion/review/rating will be coming soon.  Perhaps we can 
have various areas for voting... not just "8/10" for game, but maybe 
"overall desirability", and "perceived rarity", etc.

Yes i saw you had that ordering option, maybe just add some script that
reverses the order when you click on that buttons eg

click once page is refreshed with japan first, click again and its refresed
with japan second, i assume your just ordering on the county name.  Pitty
the script wasnt writtten in ASP i write all the code for you :) ( seeing as
im a web developer anyways :) )

This would be a good feature, as would the ability to add comments about the
games, almost like a mini review, a text box restricted to 200 chars would
do the job.

look forward to it expanding, one final feature i wouldnt mind is an export
function to export the game name, country and other details to an csv file.
would be a great way to tick off games i do or dont have.. :)

Hello all, I just thought I'd let everybody know about my latest game list
update.  Shipping costs are $5 flat rate (whether you buy one game or 100)
via USPS priority mail within the US, as for international orders, shipping
costs will be decided based on destination and relative weight.  Payment via
Paypal or money order.  This list is divided into three sections: loose hus,
complete hus, and complete CD, SCD, and ACDs.  All titles are Japanese PC
Engine versions.  Unless otherwise noted, titles are in conditions varying
from very good to mint; if you have any specific questions about condition,
