Posted to soon. Each episode is pretty much just like every other, story doesn't seem to go anywhere.

If I had to guess you're at around episode 4 or 5 so the show is still
introducing the cast and setting. Have some patience. DtB doesn't hurry.

.... the "Irresponsible Captain Tylor" OAVs. Somewhat slower than the TV
series, but still enjoyable.

(And I'd love to see that series re-made with modern production values,
continuing with the novels that didn't get turned into anime the first
time around.)

It was a bit preachy, but it was a happy ending. I was left wondering
how many people actually inhabitated the earth at the end of the series,
though. Also, how is it that Marlene got pregnant with Yūji’s child
almost immediately? (Space-age contraceptives, I presume.)

Not as much as EVERYTHING made by Tomino. :)

Not many. Maybe a tiny handful of stragglers who didn't get picked up for
Second Earth, plus the Second Earth escapees. Takahashi played the Adam &
Eve card very strongly in Blue Gender.

I finished the Vandread series (both the first and second stages). You
really don't get into detail about what everybody is running away from
until you get to the second stage. Vandread Second Stage also has a
shocker about one of the characters (anzryl, vg'f n punenpgre jub unq n
frk punatr bcrengvba gb orpbzr n fcl). Yikes!

I tried watching Elfen Lied yesterday but the first two episodes went way
too slow. Elfin Lied seems to aim more toward the emo crowd.

I really, really liked Vandread. They set up for a stupid harem comedy and
then... don't. It goes in a completely different direction. And then they
pull that story arc with Bart early in Second Stage.

Elfen Lied is another very psychological, character-driven show. If you're
expecting action then it won't deliver.

Some recent things on the pile.

"Seikon no Qwaser". In a word: awful. It has some neat possibilities in
the set up, particularly in the use of Eastern Orthodox mysticism rather
than overly used and misused Roman Catholic and Hebrew traditions. I can
even deal with the blatant sexuality of the premise.

The problem, however, lies in the characters, specifically Alexander and
Ekaterina. The Wikipedia article describes the relationships between these
two "good guy" Qwasers and their human Marias as being professional and
personal, respectively. Not so. both Alexander and Ekaterina treat their
Marias the same way: as soma capacitors to be used and drained. The Qwasers
take and take... and that's it. This isn't partnership. It's abuse.

I gave up half way through episode 6 after seeing how Ekaterina stuffed
Hana in a closet with "Mama".

"Sekirei". I picked this up because of a comment made regarding the poor
handling of powerful characters in "Freezing". I'd originally passed on
Sekirei because of the cutesy character designs and the harem set up so I
was quite pleasantly surprised. Sekirei is actually quite good. Yes, it is
a harem show but the harem aspect is almost incidental. It has a plot
beyond throwing a bunch of girls at one guy and seeing how many different
ways he can be embarrassed.

The writing is good. Not great, but perhaps that's because the sekirei are
so over the top. That tends to interfere with the Deep and Meaningful.
This is where the differences between Lim Dall-Young and Sakurako
Gokurakuin really hit home. Dall-Young couldn't handle these characters.
He'd pull a Dragonball-style over 9000 escalation, find himself in a
corner, and flail around looking for a way out like he did with "Aflame
Inferno". Gokurakuin writes her characters as people striving to achieve
their goals.

I'm hoping a third series gets a green light. That will need to wait for
the manga to move forward.

Next up, in no particular order, "Bakemonogatari", "Occult Academy", "E's
Otherwise" and maybe (very maybe) "High School DxD".

Almost finished with the English dub of "Speed Grapher". It's a shame

I am re-watching Maison Ikkoku and
have watched the latest Yawara releases in .mkv
though I had a problem with VLC that led to
complete re-install of same.
Yawara wins but congratulates Sayaka
on the improvement in her strength. Sayaka
decides to study further with Kojiro.

Reading Adachi's "Short Program" series
which looks very like the rest of his work but
is very good (like his longer works.)

At home ill and making a dent in my "to be watched" pile... Yesterday, I
watched the first half of "K-On!!" (season 2), today I finally watched
"Big O II".

The culture clash is not recommended. Each individual show is
recommended, though.

Red Photon Zillion, an 80s classic! Zillion is the tie in anime to the
Sega Master System video game and laser tag toy. Zillion is the first
show made by Production IG, and the quality shows. I originally saw
Zillion on a local UHF station that picked up a strange satellite
network called "Network One". Network One has an anime block (they
called it "Japanimation"!) that showed Streamline dubs such as:
Cagliostro, Dirty Pair EDEN and Nolandia, Fist of the Northstar, and
Zillion (the first few eps and the "Burning Night" OVA. Now I'll
finally be able to see the entire show (I recently acquired the entire
series on Laserdisc too!).

Just an addendum: had an anime block (this was back in the mid 90s). I
wrote this message twice, because google ate my first draft by
replying only to the OP.

Anyway, the 90s were some interesting times: back then the SciFi
channel showed anime on "Saturday Anime" and they also had an "Anime
Week" (where I saw the Galaxy Express movies for the first time).
Thanks SciFi channel for what you used to be (before all of the off
topic programming and crummy original movies).

Watched "Occult Academy".

The plotting of this show is terrible. It doesn't know what it wants to be
and it never spends more than a single episode exploring what it could be.
Most of what happens is irrelevant to the core plot and what is connected
seems hastily backfilled at the end.

The supporting cast are either stereotypes or gimmicks. Despite all the
digressions revolving around them they never seem to break out of their
molds.

I still call it a good show. Not great, but still good. That's because
none of the plots, not even the core plot of finding the MacGuffin and
preventing Nostradamus' prediction of the end of the world from coming
true, are what it's about. The show is really about Maya: where she's
been, where she is, and where she's going. The show suffers when Maya is
out of the picture, but when she is center stage it really works.

Speaking of culture clash, I spent yesterday afternoon watching "Banner
of the Stars II" for the first time. Again, a good show that's nothing
like the other two I watched this week.

(I think that's everything with a "II" in the name that was in the
to-watch pile. ^_^ More importantly, I'm no longer so ill that I should
stay home, so back to work...)

Not long, it turned out. I hadn't noticed that
the last disc in the package was the Movie.

Since it appears that Atlanteans and Humans are
cross-fertile, I wonder about Nemo's final
statements on the numbers of remaining Atlanteans.
Was that to be just pure-blooded Atlanteans,
just the royal line, or has the number of
crosses been suspiciously small.

Compare with Lord of the Rings, where there
were very few crosses between Eldar and Edain,
but elvish blood was common in certain parts
of Gondor.

BAD. You know those times people warn you that something's really bad,

But there are in Middle Earth more races
of Elves than the Eldar. Maybe you haven't read
all the tales. Plenty of wood elves and the like
to cross with humans.

Ryk... Yes, the movie has more than its share of WTF moments. Yes, the
first third is a recap of the TV series. But it's not as bad as, say,
the Star Wars Holiday Special...

How would you compare that to the Red Garden Movie? I started watching
it (several years back), and could not stand to watch more after their
first crime chase shall we call it, and their first (to steal a term)
club house meeting. Ugh, Loved the series, could not finish the movie.

Good, you saved your eyeballs from some terrible burnout. LOL. If you
saw Red Garden, and liked it at least a little, the movie was horrible,
I think I mentioned elsewhere that I could not even bear to watch it to

I somehow have gotten Thunderbird messed up with their last upgrade, and
I've fallen and I can't get up. Seriously, I no longer have control of
seeing my posts since their lkast upgrade. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the older version, no help all is the same. I have posts
listed in the All Folders menu (left side) that I can not access, and I
can't even figure out how to send a 'new' post. Any ideas on what I can
do? Help would be really great.

Quit Thunderbird, rename its profile folder, start Thunderbird. That
will create a new profile. Quit Thunderbird again and selectively copy
(don't move!) your prefs/mail folder/whatever to the new profile.

Ikki Tousen, because I have season 2 coming in soon from Netflix.

When I originally watched Ikki Tousen I was taken in with how it adapted
"Romance of the Three Kingdoms". The portrayal of Sun Ce's (Sonsaku's) Wu
faction as the protagonists is an interesting perspective to take. Turning
one of the most brilliant and personable generals of the period into a
bubble-headed ditz, while silly, actually works in how it relates the tale.

Well... not really. Ikki Tousen hasn't aged well. That's pretty sad for a
show that's shy of 10 years old. It's not aggressively bad like Tokyopop's
atrocious handling of the manga. It simply falls into the mediocre
category with titillation relief (which is a bit like comic relief only
unnecessary and not funny).

It doesn't help that I find myself distracted by the Japanese versions of
all of the characters' names. I currently am more familiar with the
original Chinese names. I keep doing double-takes when new characters are
introduced and then I find myself looking up the name conversions to see
whether I'm right or wrong.

Still, it has a coherent story holding the whole mess together. That's
more than some of what I've seen in the past year has offered.

Seconded. I have the 10th Anniversary tin box of this series that only has
the TV series. I stumbled across the movie in a department store for only
$4. I bought it and watched it. I want my $4 and time back.

Watson.

So much for that sentiment. One episode into the second season and it's
clear that the replacement production company didn't even try for coherent
plotting. Or maybe the manga really is this incoherent and the animation
staff are just following the script.

And what the great leaping F is with turning Liu Bei (Ryubi) into a
coward? I can deal with the ditzy. I can deal with the klutzy. But a
coward? No. Just... no.

I watched through Tenjho Tenge earlier this year. Back when Ikki Tousen
and Tenjho Tenge were first brought over to the US I felt that Ikki Tousen
had the stronger story behind it. Today? A complete 180. Ikki Tousen not
held up over time and the follow on series doesn't even try.
